is the Acer Ferrari 4005 any good for gaming?

Hi.
I am thinking about buying a 4005, but I was wondering how it stacks up for gaming?
I am primarily interested in playing Half Life 2, CS Source, Battlefield 2.

What kind of resolutions and detail settings can you play on and still have decent performance?

The Acer Ferrari? YOu mean the one running the X700, the fastest processor available for mobiles without sacrificing battery life and portability? Of course it is! > I was going to just respond with "What are you talking about, of course!"

I don't know exact resolutions, but to put it in perspective, it gets about 2800 overclocked in 3DMark05 at standard settings...

Heh...good question. Gaming is probably the strong point of the Ferrari 4005wlmi! It has a very fast stock clocked X700 GPU, hence it beats most other X700 notebooks, be it Centrino or AMD, in gaming. It also has a really good fast screen. So if portable gaming is your thing, the Ferrari 4005wlmi is what you want, if you have the dough that is.

Thank you for the replies

Thanks for the replies.

Probably seemed a stupid question, but I have a NVidia 6800GT 256mb on my desktop at home which is slightly better, so I had to ask if there was any considerable "downgrade".

But being on the road a lot due to work, my little lighweight Dell C400 with integrated 32mb Intel graphics doesn't allow for much gaming (although gaming is not the only reason for an upgrade, but it's a nice "extra").

Wfalter, I'm looking into this laptop as well. I would think you maybe looking at a significant downgrade in gaming performance. If you are trying to run the game at the lappy screen's native resolution, you are going to tax on the X700 quite a bit.

Oh, you'll certainly see a downgrade... laptop cards aren't really that comparable with their desktop counterparts. However, if you're _really_ interested in getting desktop performance, you're going to have to look for a laptop featuring the X800 (if it even exists?) or the 6800 Go (like the XPS Gen 2). However, you'll be sacrificing portability and battery life...

Personally, I wouldn't recommend looking for a portable desktop in your laptop... the Ferrari looks like a great machine, and it will play more than its share of games. However, since it is a laptop, you'll have to sacrifice a few things...

What about the look of the screen ...... it seems according to the specs that the display is not of the "glossy" bright looking display..... Is this true?? Or is it backlit as bright? Currentlly I have a Toshiba 'Truebrite' laptop and would now find it hard to go back to dull displays! I did notice on the Canadian Acer website that they have a slower model of the Ferrari that has the bright screen??

Just would like to know as I am considering this Laptop, Thanks

I prefere Anti-Glare type screens myself. Acer made the right choice for the Ferrari 4005wlmi. They are easier on the eyes and very very sharp. Glare/Glossy type screens have a strong mirror effect, much like a regular TV-screen, don't like them that much. But it's not like I would base what notebook to get depending on the screen type, it just doesn't mean that much to me... Almost all notebook screens (wide screens) are very good nowadays.

What about the brightness and side viewing? As far as anti-glare I have noticed in the stores that they tend to muddy the image. I have an anti-glare protection film on my pocket PC which does the same...... when removed the contrast seems to be better! It seems the trend toward glossy screens so it is getting harder to side by side compare. I have an older laptop I recently bought used and it has the matte screen which looks good until I turn on the glossy one then the clarity is obvious......so maybe the Farrari has brighter back lighting?

Thanks....

a trubrite, glossy, whatever screen does look nicer. But not by much. I wouldn't buy something else over the Ferrari just because it had a glossy screen.
