I thought that the Dell laptops are no longer shipping with the program/utility that lets you burn a Backup Recovery OS CD?

One question. I've seen people on Ebay and other internet software shops that sell the Dell OS CD's for around $50.00. I currently have XP Home and want to upgrade to Pro. If I purchased one of these discs will I be able to upgrade with out a COA (Certificate of Authenticity) or would I still need a cd key during installation.

Question: does the $10 Win XP CD that Dell ships to you work with any computer or just that particular laptop? I think if you created the CD yourself, it only works for the laptop you have. Correct me if I am wrong...

Not sure about the $10 CD. I do know that the CD you make is only for your laptop because the drivers are slipstreamed into it.

We just have to wait until someone spends $10 to get a CD and see if its the OS CD or a customized CD for a specific laptop.

I could see them blacklisting you if you made nasty violent threats but it would have to be something extreme like that. Otherwise its just recording the conversation so they can use it to improve their jobs or giving some kind of feedback or for training purposes. I wouldnt worry about being blacklisted just for asking for something. Worse case scenario is that they say, 'no', to your request. But apparently they aint saying 'no' to those that call and ask for the cd.

I called Dell customer service today to request CDs. Conversation was as follows:

Me: I read online that my 700m notebook computer is supposed to have a utility that lets me burn a Windows recovery CD.

Customer service: That is correct sir.

Me: My computer does not have that installed. Can you please send me a Windows recovery CD, a driver CD, and an applications CD?

Customer service: Yes sir. They should arrive within 3 days.

I was not on the phone 3 minutes total.

It was that easy.
