This one has a dvd burner software I am burning now my first test dvd.

So far so good. I am using Konqueror for the net now, will go back to Mozilla soon. Konqueror seems to work prety well.....

Nice, Ray... hey, which model do you have again? I'm always looking for a nice linux distro for my 8887, but installs usually hang (even after hours of tweaking, searching, reading, etc.).

Distro Version

I am utilizing SuSE 9.0 with the KDE (default ) 3.1 GUI for a frontend. This thing is "Ray Proof" and as EZ as windows for the most part. I am doing an online update for all the packages and burning a DVD at the same time. No problems.
No tweaking and figuring out stuff here. It has detected everything and so far everything works.

Pretty suwwwwwwweeet so far.

This one comes with 5 cd's and a DVD.........and unbelieavable amount of kewl software. Best bargain around for 64 bux in my opinion..free shipping from Amazon.

I have a network at home with 3 laptops, and 3 desktops one being a server. This version of SuSE has Samba and I plan on learning how to configer this server software........

I meant to say, "What model SAGER laptop" do you have it running on... I cannot remember if you have a 8886, 8887 or 56xx series (or what).

Thanks,

Linux is running

on my Server which is a Dell 700 XPS with a gig memory and dual 160 gig hardrives.....

also on a compaq presario ........

both desktops. Do not have it on the laptops. On those I run only XP pro, but since the newer version of SuSE 9.0 now supports ntfs I was thinking of trying it out on a laptop (one hardrive). On the desktops it was easy as I had 2 harddrives in each box. so xp on one, linux on the other and both dual boot with windows as the primary.

Me too. I got suse 9.0 installed ok, but it didn't pick up the video card correctly - thinks it is 16MB, and it doesn't find the wireless internal networking card, and i don't think it found the internal ethernet card either.

I would love it if Suse v9 worked on my 8890. My old Dell laptop had a WinXP - Suse v8.2 dual boot, and I miss Suse bigtime. If Suse supports the raid configuration...I'll give it a try.

Nox

After you install did you go to Yast and do an update?

Try the updates after the install, it should then recognize your usb's

Hey, could you get the live eval to boot. I tried nofirewire and nousb. My 8887 starts to boot but when it gets to the firewire it crashes.

Is this just something to do with the live eval CD or would the "real" version do the same thing?card.

Note: Mandrake 9.2 works pretty well. I don't have to use any special commands and it sees my internal wireless .

Thanks

I can't get Suse 9 to install on my 8890. At least I'm afraid to proceed with installation, because during the initial setup stage...when I get to the compile the install...lilo doesn't show windows as a boot option. My drives are raided strip 0 (two 60gb drives). Boot options are just linux, safe mode, mem test - thru lilo. I took the 120gb logical drive and partitioned 10 gb at the end of the drive/raid array. It keeps trying to set up the boot record on sda...and there is no sda. If I pick a part of the raid (which it does see) it still doesn't see my WinXP installation. I tried a custom partitioning scheme, and it didn't work either. So...I can't proceed without losing my winXP install. Does anyone have some advice?

Dear One of Nine,
Although not so appearing at first glance, it is easier in the long run to keep your current windows partition intact by resizing. Naturally, no guarantees, but Bootit, from http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ will rezise your windows, even if ntfs, and, again, with all necessary discalimers, I have never had a problem with lost data. It is relatively self-explanatory.
You can resize, then use lilo or grub, whichever Suse likes, to dual boot, as the MBR from windows will still be intact. I use grub, because it is easier to keep track of kernels, but lilo is a super easy config, so that once in linux, you can simply add the windows install as a three line option in the lilo.config file.
After resizing, just have the installer from Suse use free space to create the necessary home and swap partitions.

Good luck,

No I don't think I've done that. How do I go about doing that? Thanks ahead of time, I appreciate your time. I assume you mean downloading some file from suse and burning it to a cd from windows since I can get on the net on it and then install the updates in suse?

Assuming Suse is installed

If so start applications ( in KDE I dont usr Gnome )

Go to system

then Yast type in root pw

Then you will see both online update and sys update.

At first mine did not see the E card (8.2 did not but 9.0 did )

It DID however immediatly recogize my usb adapter that had my blue line hooked up to it, then I was able get online and get all my updates.

Also a good info site is

Thanks, I got it to update through the ethernet card. You were right it did recognize that during the install I guess I missed it. Something was weird when I downloaded the updates, one of them was an NVIDIA driver. Did you use that as your driver for the ATI 128 MB video card? I skipped that as I wasn't sure and didn't want to mess it up. I guess they haven't released drivers for most of the stuff it didn't recognize initially. Main ones I want are the wlan and the video card. I have been thinking about trying Neverwinter Nights in Linux, to see how it compares to windows.

I saw that some people may have already got the video card to work in linux, but I'm too much of a newbie to understand their explanation. I can follow system commands as I can just type them in, but not the other things that linux types can understand.

yazdzik, I don't think you quite understand my problem. I have already resized the raid array. Suse 9 sees the array, and the free space to install itself on. But it doesn't see windows itself. It sees the windows partition...the reamaing 110 gb's of the array. I don't want to get suse on, and not have access to my windows install. Is there a problem with having the free space at the end of a drive that might cause suse to see windows. Or is there another way to get suse to re-examine the drive configuration to look for windows?

Go to Linux GOOGLE.......

Type in the model number of your video card and then ask for drivers.
On mine although I could not find the exact linux drivers for my card, I DID get some that would work and did just fine.
Hope this helps

Couldn't find it. Which ones did you get that worked fine for yours? I did find a site that said it worked for the 9600 pro but it didn't say whether it would work for the mobility 9600 pro. i also found this site http://www.scitechsoft.com/ftp/snap/linux/readme.txt - will it work? I want to be sure because I don't like spending time reinstalling the os because I picked a driver that screws up linux.

I need to bump this to the top again. How can I get Suse to see my windows installation - which is set up on dual 60gb drives on a raid 0 array....ntfs file system. I installed on my kids computer and it went flawlessly. But during the initial boot off cd on my 8890 it sees the raid array, but does not see windows. Is there a different driver I need for the promise controller? Is the problem the ntfs file system? If necessary I will re-installl windows on one drive, and disable the raiid - but I'd rather not do that. Help please!
