9300: Disconnect adapter, then screen goes blank

Hello,
I just bought an inspiron 9300 -- I've only been using it for like 2 weeks. Yesterday, I noticed a problem where if I disconnect the power chord, the screen will go blank (but the cpu is still running). I tried pressing a variety of buttons to get the screen to turn on again, but to no avail. Anyone know what might be causing this?

Thanks.

What adapter? Do you have an external monitor attached or something?

Oh, by adapter, I just meant the power chord. (I'll edit my post and edit the terms.)

Okay, you MIGHT have a weird setting in your system BIOS--I'm told that there's an option in there that lets you set the MAX brightness in both AC (power cord in) and battery modes. Check to see that you aren't set to some real low value in there.

Also, I'm assuming that you've tried the Fn-<up arrow> combination when the screen blanked...

All of my BIOS settings are still the default values, and, in my opinion, none are "real" low.

Also, I had another problem, which may elucidate on this. Before, my laptop would make a really loud beeping sound at times (e.g. when my popup blocker blocked an ad). I followed another thread on this forum and turned that off. However, yesterday, one of these loud beeps caused my screen to turn off as well. Actually, I dunno if "caused" is the right word, but the two events pretty much happened simultaneously.

Try the following:

1) Dell Diagnostic Boot -> turn laptop on by hitting power button AND mute button on front of laptop at same time
Follow the directions.
2) Try going into Windows via Safe Mode and perform a spyware/anti-virus/trojan scan set -> ewido is useful for the trojans (this isn't likely the problem, but it can't hurt)

If that's an ati card in there, disable powerplay on it and see if the problem persists.

I am having exactly the same problem!

I will try disable ATI powerplay.
