12" Notebook with best dedicated graphics?

Thread Starter
Hey guys - I'm searching for a 12 inch notebook with the best dedicated graphics card available, preferably one from the latest generation that has DX9 shaders and the like. I'm guessing this is the 6200 128, unless there is a 6600 in a 12 inch for some reason. My logic here is that this card will be plenty to play the latest games on the low resolution of a 12 inch screen. Does this seem logical?

My ideal 12" laptop would have an aluminum or carbon fibre chassis, good graphics card, latest model Pentium-M (533fsb) or Turion processor, and a colorshine/xbrite/crystalview glossy screen, 1gb or more of RAM, wireless, bluetooth, Dual Layer DVD+_RW preferably slot load, ability to hold a 100gb 5400/7200 or 60gb 7200rpm hdd and the rest of the stuff we expect from a good laptop these days

Anyone think they can point me in the right direction?

I think you're going to have to bump up your screen to 13.3 or 14 inches, most 12" notebooks (all that I can think of at the moment) have integrated graphics...

If you're stuck on the 12" requirement, you might want to look at the MSI S270, it has the Radeon XPRESS 200M, which is probably the best integrated graphics solution on the market now...

Argh. I guess 13 would be permissible - are there any besides the Sony? Also, do you know if 128mb integrated gfx are able to play the latest games at 1024x768 at high detail? I'd expect not, but I've never really heard of intel's new mobile technology.

No, definately not..

The only 12" notebook with integrated gfx that comes to mind is the Apple 12' Powerbook, but that only has a 32MB Radeon 9200.

the s270/1013 model gets about 1000 on 3dmark03, not exactly gaming power, but not bad for integrated.

There are no gaming 12" laptops out there. You're better off buying a slightly larger laptop if graphics are important to you.

Dont think you'll get all that in a 12inch, only 12 inch with dedicated i can think off is a HP nc4010.

Intel Pentium M 1.7 GHz
512 MB (DDR SDRAM)
12.1 in. TFT Active Matrix
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
64mb video
400 MHz
ATI RADEON IGP 350M
24-bit (16.7 million colors) 1024 x 768
2 x USB 2.0, RJ-11 (modem), RJ-45 (NIC), S-Video out, TV Out (RCA)
40 GB 5400 RPM

Apart from that you'll have to increase the screen size.

That's not dedicated.. The Radeon IGP 350M is even worse than the XPRESS 200M. To truly be able to call a laptop a 'gaming' one, you'll need to step up to the 14" ones.

I thought there was a Sony VAIO with a Radeon 9700?

The Sony S360 had a 9700, Craig's written a very good review about it in the Sony section...but it's a 13.3" screen...

It's replacement is the S400 series, with a NVIDIA 6200...

I'd be tempted to go for the S400 series sony, but aside from a general mistrust of sony, they are EXTREMELY expensive for what you get, in my opinion. I could spend the same amount and get a loaded Acer Ferrari, one of the Asuses (Asusi?), or a DTR. I'll have to keep looking around.

ASUStek, or ASUS

Now where was that pronounciation of ASUS thread...

Hehe. I was wondering the plural form of Asus

Coriolis- Fan of Bleach are we ^_^

Still searching for a decent notebook... can anyone point me toward the "best" of the 13/14 inch field then, with dedicated graphics?

In terms of performance, the Acer Travelmate 3210 probably has that spot down. However, the one with the X700 is nowhere to be found in North America. Aside from that, you're probably looking at the Chembook for performance.

In terms of overall built/asthetics, I really like the look of the ASUS W3V. Build is solid too, but there seems to be substantial overheating from the HDD in that laptop.

For the US, it seems to be a toss between the Asus W3V the Chembook 2030 and the Toshiba Tecra M3. There's a big difference in price between the Chembook and the other 2 though, like $400 difference for similar configuration. Asus has the glossy wide screen, the Toshiba has the option for the 6600 go, the Chembook comes with a 2 year warranty standard and doesn't have a heat problem...styling is completely subjective.

Oh yeah, you can also get the Chembook as a barebone directly from ChemUSA.

i checked out couple of 12 inch laptops and I am not really happy with the button size... I type really fast and I was unable to do that on 12 inch Dell 700m... but my 13 inch Fujitsu is perfect for that!
