To Sony S (Dothan) owners playing BF2 with 1500mb + of memory

HI,

I currently have a VGN S170P with 1.7 PM, 1000 mb of ram(512mb x2), ATI 9700 (64mb) and 80GB hd (4K RPM). I've been playing BattleField 2 on medium setting and experiencing lots of lagging while playing single and multiplayer mode. I upgraded my video drivers to the latest ATI Catalyst 5.6 about a month ago with no improvement.

If I upgrade to 1500 mb of ram, will it make a difference? Or is the GPU the bottleneck? Swissbit manufactures 1gb 172 pin MicroDimm modules and retails for $355. Any inputs are appreciated!

Do you have mouse lags specifically? Like your frame rates will remain high, and you will move forwards as per the keyboard's presses, but the mouse will stop responding for a second?

I only have the 512mb ram still and that's the only lag I get. I hate it. Hoping more ram will fix it.

might be the graphics card, bf on a dell inspiron 6000, 1.83ghz, x300 64mb, 512 ram, 5200 rpm, it can take low-medium settings ok, though if everything is on medium there is some lag, the game is just too hungry. I think its everything, even my athlon 64 3500+ 1gb, 6800 gets lag sometimes, but i think this game requires like 1.1 gigs of ram, if you look at the page file usage while playing the game it is over 1 gig.

switching to 1.5gbs of ram won't cure it. I would check and see if any kind of power management settings are active and if they are disable them and if all that checks out then the game is just to much for the processor and graphics card and memory (im talking speed not quantity). Remember there is always overclocking :P

I have to say that I didn't have a lot of luck with bf2 with the 360 and 1 gig ram. I could only play 800x600 with some settings on medium. I have since purchased a 460 dropped in 2 gig ram and it plays the game very well. Playing 1024 x 768 settings on low very smooth. I will tweak it up a few notches to see how it does.

Yes, I get mouse lag on my 360. Kinda stinks. I'll have to save up for more RAM because I'm buying a new HD.

smileyman111, so you have stock 512mb ram and stock 4200rmp hdd, and you're getting a new hdd? Could you let me know if a faster HDD helps the mouse lag? I will let you know if more ram (1gb total) helps mine if you want.

Barrman: as far as I know, we can only overclock our videocards (my core goes up 100mhz, go figure) and that doesn't seem to be the problem.

cdd543's results seem to indicate that the 9700 is fast enough, and others indicate that up to 1.5gb ram doesn't help or is not enough. But the mentioned dell runs the game acceptably with 512 mb ram. An x300 is far inferior to my overclocked 9700, so again, the videocard is not to blame. However, it has a 5400 rmp hard drive. I think everyone who is having problems with bf2 on a S360 still has the 4200 rpm hdd. Anyone have evidence that the hdd is not to blame for slow performance in bf2 on the S360? Doesn't seem to be the amount of ram, cpu speed or graphics card memory/speed...

I just bought a 1 gb MicroDimm

HI,

I just bought a 172 pin 1GB MicroDimm on Ebay for $255+ tax. I should have the memory by the end of the week and report if any improvements. The only thing I hate is that I have 512mbx2 and need to remove one module to install the 1GB module.

Someone mentioned the 4K rpm could be the bottleneck as well? I want to do this upgrade with a dvd rw replacement but it looks like its going to cost to much $$$ and time to do. I will check with the local bay area computer shops to see how much they charge for this type of work.

I thought the lag thing was a driver issue? ATI cards just dont play the game that well

medium setting? WOW! your really pushing it.

Update!

I picked up the 1 GB 172 pin MicroDimm from Memoryx.com this morning. Installation was a snap. I now have 1.5 gb showing on the system properties. I tested my Vaio s by playing BF2, Rome Total War, and Act of War - ram hungry games and I could not believe it! I did not think an extra 512 mb from 1 Gb could make a difference! I have not experience any lag (any type) at all with BattleField 2 so far! I am using 1280x800 on medium setting + AAX2. I will do more testing tonight - I have to work!

Does anyone know how to change the BF2 game screen to widescreen? I now have an extra 512 mb memory module sitting on my desk....

Update 2.0

After a week of trying out games like BF2, Rome Total War, Act of War and ram hungry programs like Photoshop CS, I must say that 1.5 gb + is a must for Sony S (dothan) owners. Everything runs so much faster and smoother! I can even play BF2 in 1280x800 on high resolution! I just wished that this notebook came with at least 3 microdimm slots instead of 2 so that I didnt have to dump my extra 512 mb memory module(for a total of 2 G).

Now I am curious to see if 2 G of memory could make any more improvements on our notebook.....

4200k is a huge bottleneck too
