WARNING for those getting a DVD+-RW from Asus in near future

Hi All,

Because of the current shortage of Toshiba/Samsung DVD+-RW units for Asus notebooks, current shipments are Panasonic/Matshiita drives, the UJ-31D. Apparently these Panasonic drives are absolute crap, and don't even burn anything (CDs OR DVDs) at their advertised speed! They also have no firmware updates available for download, and they have absolutely shoddy support.

See this forum post for more info:

I just thought everyone should know what they're potentially in for.

Great . I hope they get this fixed before the Refresh comes in.

Ohs.. Glad I got one of those TSST drives then... :-/

Ditto...

I actually think the TSST drives suxored majorly also -- I swiitched mine out for the MUCH more quiet and reliable NEC 6500A. It has great firmware support (factory and community). It burns all the media I throw at it either at rated speed or above (Also great D/L support)

I wish Asus would just sell the darn CD drive adaptor, bezel and the plastic carrier (everything without the drive) so we could choose the drive to put in.

When I get a chance, I will put up a tutorial on changing out the DVD drive. For now, just get the CDRW/DVD reader (cheaper) and get the NEC -- (Just my opinion)

Oy! Didn't know you could use the NEC on this laptop? Does the bezel actually fit properly?
hmm, i have that drive(UJ-831D) right now and I'm okay with it now. So far I tried burning a 8x DVD+R with no problem, and I tried a 4x DVD-R with no problem. CD-R burn at 24x perfectly. Haven't tried a DVD+RL so I can't comment on it. The firmware issue is a problem that does need to be addressed though. Also, DVD-R brand was Memorex, and the DVD+R is GQ brand quality from Frys.

No, it won't. But I wouldn't mind having that drive on this bad boy, too.

This only applies to the ensemble, right?
Well in the other thread he mentioned it was on the Z70V. Mine, luckily came with the Samsung, but I think he's just discussing about the drive itself. So for us consumers to watch out for it or inquire what we're getting.

I think this drive is being used on all Asus notebooks at the moment, not only ensembles or whitebooks (due to the shortage of Toshiba/Samsung drives)

Does this also mean that the Asus W2V has one of these ? I was really keen on getting this Laptop now not so if there is a problem with the DVD writer
post #13 of 43
I think the W2 comes with a special slot-loading drive. So there shouldn't be a problem with that. Usually if something doesn't perform up to its specs, it's usually returnable or upgraded.

YES IT WILL !

I have it on there right now.

Now class for a recap...
NEC 6500A drive with the TSST bezel for the Asus machines -- No modding -- Just snap it on. Fits perfectly -- Film @ 11:00

hey White Heat, will the NEC 6500A also fit the z70V refresh? I really don't want to buy that drive that ASUS is offering with all the problems that people are having. Should i just buy the reader or not even get a drive and just buy a NEC 6500A from say newegg.com? Where is a place that i can buy the NEC 6500A for cheapest price?

thanks
I think the z70v refresh uses the same optical drive as the other Built on Asus laptops.
You can froogle for the ND-6500A or Newegg has the new model ND-6650 for $95.99 and free shipping (as far as I can tell, this model just adds faster R- and RW- speeds and 4X D/L speeds)

I know that NEC drives all use the same bezel so feel confident that the bezel will fit.
Thanks for the info White Heat, I really thought the ND-6500a wouldn't fit the bezel. I think I got that info from a dealer on one of these threads. I'm glad it's compatible for I have it on my DV1000 and my desktop already, I love this drive.
Note: Not bitch slapping my samsung that came with the Z70V, it works great also.

Depends on where u watch it - some DVD players like -R. Most of the newer commercial dvd players like +R. I really wish they would have made 1 standard but I can't hae it all my way.
