Dell's next laptop?!? - Page 2

10.6" laptops are pretty cool. I saw one from Sony, and if it was not so expensive, I would consider it. Also, there's this one system called the Flybook, which has a 10" screen. It's amazingly portable. My friend has one, and I would buy one, too, but it's processor is only 1GHz, and it's a Robinson Crusoe Transmeta, or whatever they're called, and there's a huge waiting list for them in the US, as there's only one guy that sells them right now, or there was about 4 months ago. They may have gotten more distributers now.

For me the screen size range would be 14" - 19". But thats just my own personal tastes and use. Smaller doesnt always equate to cheaper although it can be. Depends on what it is you're buying.

My current lappy is a 15.1" and isnt too bad for gaming as far as screen size goes. Unfortunately its seriously outdated now for todays games. I'm thinking the 17" screen will be perfect. Basically just taking it back and forth to work, friends and families. Nothing requiring boarding a plane luckily.

I have both ends of the spectrum -- the Inspiron XPS2 (17" wide, of course) and the Sony Vaio TR1A, which is one of their 10.6" widescreen laptops. The Sony is literally half the size of the XPS2. They compliment each other, though -- the XPS2 is the big beefy primary system that can do anything, and the Sony is the small, portable system with an 8-hour battery life (drops down to 6 with WiFi on ). I can carry the XPS2 around with me to a certain extent, but when I go on a transatlantic flight, I want to carry the Sony, not the Dell.

As for a 19" widescreen... no thanks!

Smaller is usually not cheaper, and neither is bigger. The cheapest ones are usually in the middle, like 14" and 15.4". When you go to 13" or below, you're paying for the small size. When you go to 17", you're paying for the power that it offers, and also the big screen.

I don't reckon the M70 is cheap. Nor is the D810. But they are for me the very limit of portability (though my old i8100 was bigger and heavier!). Once one reaches what one feels comfortable with, there is not even a choice to go bigger. The i9300 is obviously a nice pc / I mean "screen!"; but if the 15.4" screen is one's limit, 17" is beyond it. If there's one thing that could come down in size, it is the size of the power adaptors (0.9 lbs for the 15.4" and 17" dells; smaller for the D610). As for other sizes than the 15.4": the 700m is not particularly expensive, nor the i9300, considering what you get - it's all in the screen, or not: if it's small it's easy to carry around, if it's big and very good viewing...but whatever you say - e.g "it's not much bigger than the i6000" (ie "the 17" is not much bigger than the 15.4"), that's true but...that nice bigger screen still has to be carried around ( I know: I carry around a 15.4" screen. Of course a 14" would be easier! No contest. But I went as big as I could be comfortable with, walking around, with additional things like adaptors, writing pads and books...). For each of us there is a size, big enough - and small enough.

Yeah, of course the M70 is not cheap, and nor is the D810. That is because they are geared toward the business community and are built with better quality.

Personally, I think 15.4" is kind of pushing it, but it is definately the most I would go. If I was planning to leave the system home all the time, I would go for the 9300, but then again, if I planned to do that, I would go for a desktop.

As for the prices, I was referring to laptops in general, not Dell laptops. Dell's Inspiron line is cheap, which is one of the main reasons I will purchase from Dell.
