If I buy a notebook computer online, do I pay sales tax?

I forget.

Sales tax on $14,000 at 7% is $91. I can get free shipping online from Apple.

I'm in Illinois and Apple's in California.

some times you pay sales tax it depends on if they have a store or office in that state

Yes, they do. I would do best to buy from a store that is only in a state other than mine...but that way I don't think I can get the educational discount.

I was considering buying a Dell i9300. Since Dell is based out of Austin, TX and me living in TX, I was certain that I would have to pay sales tax. So I tried using my family member's address who lives in Arkansas, and I was still charged tax. Alot of these big companies like Dell will charge you tax for pretty much every state. However, the Dell deal fell through and I decided to order my Sager 3880 from Discountlaptops.com. They are based out of Vegas, so I was not charged sales tax. Plus I get free shipping and 2.5% instant rebate for paying by cash.

It depends on what state you live in. If a company has some sort of functioning place of business in the state, chances are, they will charge you tax.

Yup, because 3 years ago, I wasn't charged sales tax for buying Dell (no outlets in California yet I guess). But now, there's the usual 8.25%.

FL makes Dell collect state tax. It depends on your state and the company you buy from. Some states enforce it and some dont and some companies collect it and some dont although most do abide by state laws but there are some that dont bother. Enforcing the state law over the Internet and online stores can be tough sometimes.

Yeah, Dell has stores in Ohio. They have a kiosk in our mall!! I HATE paying tax on online products but it was worth it.

Yeah, thats how many states get Dell. In FL they say if the company has a prescence in the state. Well, that word 'prescence' is pretty general. Dell experimented with brick & mortar stores like Gateway did but came up with the kiosk idea instead because its even lower overhead. A kiosk is a prescence though under FL tax law apparently.

I think there is a tax free exemption on laptops but up only to a certain price. At least they did it before. Not sure about this year. It probably only applies to units under $1500 since you dont need much computing power to run the office suites and such. You'd have to check to find out if they are allowing PCs this year or not.
