Acer Ferrari 4005WLMi or Fujitsu Siemens AMILO M3438G

Hello to you all,

I've been spending the last few days reading through the wealth of info on this site so I thought it was time to sign on and introduce myself.
I have been into desktops for what seems like forever (especially when I have problems ) but have not ventured into notebooks until now.
I have got the opportunity to get my hands on either of the above 2 notebooks but can't for the life of me work out which one would offer the better performance in games.
I'm not bothered at all about battery life as I will rarely take it anywhere it is prety much going to be a DTR. Not particularly bother as to the make of the processor. I am used to AMD 64's but I am after the better performer so I am not loyal.
Unfortunately I am limited to what is available from PC world so I cannot go for dells or alienwares etc.
Can anyone tell me how these match up?
Any info would be much appreciated.

Hello there Wayneski!

Im pretty much in the same situation, but I'm now thinking of buying the Amilo M4438, and mostly becuase of the extremley nice screen it has, and the somewhat good specs. The F4000 does seem like a really good notebook, so I'm still not 100% sure myself which one to buy...

Let's hope that some more people will drop by and give us their opinions on this matter.

It would help if one of you post the specs of both machines and the prices(average ballpark price, doesn't have to be exact) to help in guesstimating relative value/dollar.

well all i can say is that i have the ferrari, and it is insanely nice

In this case if gaming is what you're after, I'd take the Fujitsu with no second thoughts. The Go 6800 256MB is quite a bit better than the X700 in the Ferrari. Plus Fujitsu screens are very good and the build of the Fujitsus that I have seen are top notch.

For the Ferrari, you pay a premium for, well, the Ferrari logo on it. Not worth it if you can get something like that Fujitsu there.

Okay,
I have copied the specs from the PCW website

Fujitsu Siemens AMILO M3438G -
Pentium M 740 1.73 GHz - RAM 512 MB - HD 80 GB - DVD±RW (+R double layer) - Mdm - LAN EN, Fast EN, Gigabit EN, 802.11b, 802.11g - Centrino - Win XP Home - 17" TFT WXGA+ (1440 x 900)
£845 plus vat

Acer Ferrari 4005WLMi -
Turion 64 ML-37 2 GHz - RAM 1 GB - HD 100 GB - DVD±RW / DVD-RAM - Mdm - LAN EN, Fast EN, Gigabit EN, Bluetooth, 802.11b, 802.11g - Win XP Home - 15.4" TFT WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050)
£1105 plus Vat

I've seen some people write specs for the fuji with a better processor but that doesn't seem available from PCW.
So does a less powerful processor with less memory but a better graphics card on a bigger screen but with lower native res (and of course cheaper) provide a better gaming experience than the ferrari?
imdashep how does the ferrari perform playing games like GTA HL2 BF2 etc
Thanks again all for you advice

The pixels on the Fujitsu might seem a bit large since it's only WXGA+, but the smaller resolution will extend the usability of the machine for gaming. The size of the screen won't matter, it's just the number of pixels that have to be rendered that affects performance. As far as gaming in your situation the drop from 2ghz to 1.73ghz will be more than balanced out by the video card (6800go is roughly 2x as powerful as x700) so take the Fujitsu. Use the money you save to buy another 512MB of RAM (at least) to help with BF2.

With the Acer your paying to have that much power in a portable form factor, and for the 1GB of ram and, and Im fairly sure that the Acer like pretty much every Acer comes with Win XP pro not home. if your not going to move it around much just go with the Fujitsu, buy some more ram and Win XP Pro.

Thanks for the comments all. You sure that a 1.7Ghz Pm is beefy enough? I realise it will be out of date the second the money is in the till but just want some reassurance
Is it true these perform similar to 2.8Ghz (ish) p4's athlons?

if u r patient enough,u can wait until 19 august and see if FSC will release 4438 which have 1900 1200 resolution

for gfx/gaming performance the Ferrari 4005wlmi is one of the fastest portable notebooks due to it's combination of high stock clocked X700 GPU and the Turion 64 2.0GHz. In real gaming that is a sweet combination! It makes for one of, if not the fastest 15'4 X700 notebooks. I say if you have enough don't hessitate getting the Ferrari 4005wlmi. It doesn't hurt that it can do 3h 43min (pcmag test) on battery even if you are going to use it as DTR. Oh in UK comes with Windows XP 64-bit Pro, just nice to know it's ready to go fully 64 bit when you are...

If the Fujitsu has a 6800GO, that would be my choice. It will beat the X700 by leaps and bounds.

It performs similiar to 2.6-3.2Ghz P4 and 1.6-2.0 Ghz Athlons

Fuji is sounding good.

I do like the ferrari, but if the 6800go offers the better ommph then I guess I'm leaning that way.
The way things are going at the mo. I may be waiting past 19th Aug anyway so will keep an eye out

I can't find the M3438 anywhere on the PC World website. I've found it in the stores... but not on the site. Anywho, I'd go with the 3438 over the Ferrari.

Strange,

its on the pcworld business site www.pcwb.com

Thanks, you deserve some reputation points for that

Is it just me or does that laptop seem quite cheap? I mean Fujitsu 17" screen with a Go 6800 and all and it comes to ~$1800CAD if you factor in the exchange rate.
Yeah, it is quite cheap for what it is. Hell of a good screen on it too.

Hey I'm not complaining. Hopefully it performs as good as it looks on paper. If the processor acts like a 2.6 - 3.2ghz plus p4 i think this is a winner.WXGA+ is a good screen I take it. Whats the diff between that and a WSXGA+ that I've seen on the ferrari and the WUXGA screen that's on the daddy of this one?
