heat=major killer

At, first, I wasn't too concerned about the heat issues that some people have have, but with the new 3.06 and hyperthreading, which makes it 8-10% hotter, I'm getting worried. I know heat is bad--performance drop and frying--but will this laptop really last the 5-6 years I need it to? No matter what you think, I really will have this laptop for that long--my current laptop is 5 years old--I don't upgrade that often--not much cash.

Bottom line, it may be able to take the heat for like 1/2 year, but what about for the long run? I was all hyped up about sagers, but now I'm not sure. I don't want to make a big investment just to have it fryed--and then be in a real bad position.

-Bottom line--should I go with a desktop or mobile processor--I'm really concerned about this--might end up going with a dell.

Why don't you just get one without the hyperthreading or you can just turn off the hyperthreading if you're uncomfortable. You won't lose much performance (and you'll probably gain some of it back as some tests have shown)

Lol, you also don't necessarily have to buy one with the 3.06... that will be really expensive anyway at first. Or, if you do, then don't download the bios update to get it to have HT enabled... It won't be enabled til you do that. BUT, I will say it plainly... If there are going to be longevity problems or ANY heat problems, I don't think Sager will release an update that enabled HT. They just won't, lol. Their current laptops don't have heat problems, period, so their new ones won't.

more importantly.. if you are worried about it.. you can purchase the extended warranty. After 11 months of owning the system.. consider how many problems which have occured and whether u want to gamble it. For a couple hundred dollars you can extend the warranty to a maximum of 4 years. On the otherhand you could purchase the laptop with American Express and have a free 2 year warranty. Personally heat doesnt worry me as much as defects..

By design the laptop will last you a VERY long time.. if however a defect in one of the components exist then at somepoint that defect will become apparent..

I have a very old desktop which is a Pentium 200.. it ran perfect for many years.. one day I came home and it wasn't on. I started poking around and discovered that the bios chip had exploded. This was a defect that only time will make apparent. Higher temps can and often will increase the rate of which some of these defects become apparent.

Just because a processer is going to run 10% hotter doesnt mean its going to die sooner. It means that the system designer must find a way to remove 10% more heat from the system. These laptops are very effective at removing the heat from the inside..

just make sure u buy the longest warranty available

I honestly don't think you have anything to worry about, lol. Like I said, it wouldn't be released with options enabled that would screw up the system. That's why the clock speeds on the M9 are where they are, and that's why they have the heat sync in there that they do, and that's why there's two HUGE fans in the system and legs that raise it up off the surface for air flow :-) It's designed to handle what it's put through :-) If heat was a problem, system stability would be nil... and system stability in the 8886 I had (which had a 2.8 GHz processor... not slow and not "cool" by any means) there was NO INstability, lol. You just have to experience it to believe it I guess :-)
