5680, bad to leave it sitting in your lap?

Thread Starter
I was hanging out on my recliner last night surfing for like an hour, and I had noticed that my leg was blocking the 3 fan holes on the bottom of the case. I changed position to open them up, but I was wondering, how bad is it to have it sitting like that in your lap? I mean if you used if on a bed they would be covered. I wasnt gaming or anything, just surfing, but it was pretty warm (plugged into wall at the time)

Bad. Bad, bad, bad. My Bad. Your Bad. Blocked fans = no air = heat = bad, bad, bad. Do not use it on a lap, do not use it on a bed nap, do not use it with fans blocked, do not use it you'll be socked. (??) Anyway, it's not advisable. Get a Laptop desk 2.0, or a plain hard surface like a piece of plywood, or anything in between. Give it air. I have a Laptop desk for lap use, and a Bytecc NC-500 laptop stand with additional USB-powered fans for gaming. Give it air, give it air, give it air!

you can use it on your lap, but just remember where everything is (especially the stuff you cant block). If you want, get a little lap-desk.

if the cpu overheats it will shut down the machine to save itself.

You may have melted everything else by then. There are some posts from 6-8 months ago about meltdowns, at least one included a pix. I don't think the Sagers are overly sensitive, but a moderate amount of caution is wise.

get yourself a good lap pad, then you can use it anywhere you want. I do most of my surfing on my lap and a good pad helps a lot.

All previous posters are correct, its not a very good idea to block the fan inlets. Its also correct that the computer shuts itself down when getting to warm, at 85 degrees celsius, and when that happens there will be no harm to your computer. Its also correct that some had problems with meltdowns, but this was due to a bug in the firmware of the embedded controller, and it wasnt happening under cpu stress, but when the computer was in standby. Or at least was supposed to be in standby, and the fans didnt kick in. I believe this bug is corrected in the recent versions.

Several of us have this one:

I also have a Bytecc NC-500 fan stand. Google it. Surf these forums for other ideas.

I personally dont like those their just not what i like i ordered a cooler not the antec but one that blows the air up to the fans and it takes the air through the sides so its not blocking those fans either they are all over the internet! like here http://www.acortech.com/.sc/ms/dd/10...0Triple%20Fans

Just keep your legs towards the outside edges (for the 5680 at least) and all your fans should stay clear. The fan positioning is one improvement over the 5670 i liked.

I also use a laptop desk (the one linked above, from lapworks) and it's great. I would recomend it, usepecially the 2.0 version.

I'm surprised. At this point nobody has mentioned that not only is it not good for the lappy, but not good for you either.

I'll just leave it to that ^
