According to the August issue of Computer Shopper, Dell has announced a new premium line of desktop and laptop PC's priced between $1200 and $3500, positioned just above the Dimension and Inspiron products, slated to debut this fall!

It's their Lexus series of computers. If it comes out within the next two weeks, it'll be out in time for students, since most companies are just beginning their back to school marketing. Most colleges don't start until the last two weeks of August anyways.

My college semester doesn't begin until September 10, but I won't be buying these new Dell's. That is because not only did I buy this laptop only yesterday, but also because I would be forced to purchase online, and with a credit card limit of $500, those would be impossible for me to buy. I will be looking forward to them anyway, just to see the new stuff.

This is old news.

I'm just wondering what they will be called. They are supposed to be a different brand all together. Also, I wonder what makes them so much better that they will be required to have such a higher price tag than the Inspiron systems. All I can think of as improvement is the build quality. Other than that, I don't think there is anything that can be improved. I guess service could, but the regular service is just fine as long as you're not a jackass.

Ive heard really good things about their service. My friend recently bought a Dell Inspiron laptop and it was shipped with a faulty DVD burner so he called them and they brought a new one to his house the next day and installed it.

so is it the next step in Dell's book to cover up their shitty public image?
Whoa, I've never heard of a PC maker doing something like that. I thought a "premium line" was only something for automakers! Well, I guess I'll look forward to what this is gonna be all about, if the build quality will improve, etc. IMO, quality is very important, especially for notebooks.

They already offer laptops with such things as GeForce 6800GO's, so I am curious what is left other than things such as Image or build quality.

Well, if computer makers can have lower-line brands, like Gateway's EMachines, I guess they can have premium lines, too.

Lets take a look at HP/Compaq for a second.

HP Business Line: High quality, high priced, not cutting edge laptops
HP Pavilion: A higher end, higher quality Presario
Compaq Presario: cheap, ok quality

so if HP-Compaq was Hyundai, this is how it would break down:
HP Business : 2005 Hyundai Sonata
HP Pavilion : Other Hyundais
Compaq: KIA (yes, kia is owned by hyundai)

Even now dell somewhat has a split in it's line up if you look.

In the Desktop world we have the business workstations which are higher quality and higher price than the home model Dimention, and as always there is the XPS which is the "premium" model. In Laptops we have the mainstream cheap Inspiron line, then we have the business class Latitude line, and finally the XPS Gen 2. The line is thin, but its there, guess they are making it a bit thicker.

you mean laptops with 2 year old parts priced at $2000+ ?
Well if they can come out with something like an apple powerbook, super thin, titanium, that would kinda cool.
maybe they'll use a mid range graphics card, like a 6600 with a p-m, or put a decent graphics card in something smaller than a 17 inch screen. they seem to be the only company without a decent midsize solution

I really hope this come out with this line soon. I haven't even seen any promotions or information on the site or TV. However, it still is July so we will have to wait. I have no clue, or picture of what this line will look like. Hopefully, something good.

lets just hope its not a cute paint job and a price of an arm and a leg (much like Falcon NW or Voodoo)

Well, from what I have heard, which isnt alot, it sounded like they kicked up their customer service a notch with this new line. Which is kinda lame in some ways. I guess Dell figures people are willing to pay more for better service. So far Dell is being close lipped about this new line. We'll have to wait and see what they plan.
