z70va or z70v?

I definitely need the laptop by August 19th the latest because August 20th is move-in day for college. I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer, as a matter of fact I don't game everyday. I mostly play mmorpgs and I am considering Guild Wars. So the question is, is the x600 enough to play it on high settings?

And do you think if the x600 still be able to play games that will be released in the next 4 years with at least medium settings?

And that extra money I save from not buying the z70va would be spent on another gig of ram.

Will the X600 play Guild Wars? Yes, at med resolution and settings. Don't expect anything more than that. A more powerful CPU helps as the game seems to scale fairly well with CPU speed.

Will the X600 play games 4 years from now even at med settings, no. I don't think a X700 will even let you do that. But it will let you play Guild Wars right now with better settings that the X600 for sure.

Even though I don't game, from what I've read, I gotta agree with Chuck.

Moreover, in four year's I'd bet that all games released will be in 64bit so even if the gpu could do it, I think the the rest would be behind, at least for the newest games at that time.

Well after some thinking, I think I'll go with the current z70v. Now to wait for the intel price drop and BAM, new laptop
post #5 of 57
Well, plus, you'll have to wait for the Z70Va to actually be released, which might mean you wouldn't get it on time anyways. If you could wait the extra week or two, I'd go for the Z70Va... you may just be playing casual games now, but what about the next few years?
I wouldn't call guild wars a casual game. It can be quite graphically intensive. And that's the whole point. No matter if you get a X700 or X600 now, in a few years, the more intensive games will still crush either card. It's not until you get to the 6800/X800 that you really see the longevity kick in. That's not to say that a X700 won't be any better than a X600. Just that down the road, they will amount to just about the same, horrible for gaming. That's just the way it is. You buy something you'll use now, and worry less about what could happen in the future.

I hope I don't end up staying in my dorm playing games all day . So maybe a mediocre card now can deter me from that

Is the z63a also carbon fiber? It's just .5lbs less than the z70v, so I guess weight difference isn't too much.

hmm

i am using a z70v witha x600 right now (also i only have 512 ram)

i play guild wars on it at native resolution (1680x1050) with the distance turned up to the max (so i see further in the game) and i havent once had it lag... granted i have no aa on... i had it on 2x and it ran nicely but a few bumps, i didnt think that it was worth it- i barely notice aa when its on... 4x aa had noticeable lag

i also have half life 2 at native resolution and it runs very well at i think medium settings... havent had a problem yet

the x600 can handle every game of today.. maybe it will have trouble with the games of tomorrow but you guys are making it seem like its a piece of crap and its a really good card

Instead of rushing things, can't you just have it delivered to your dorm?

:nods head: What school are you going to that you absolutely NEED a notebook move in day? Novelty? IMO, having a computer when you move it doesn’t please me as much as getting a better computer a little bit later. If you can wait… wait… you’ll be glad you did. TRUUUUST me

I CAN wait for the z70va; I don't necessarily need it before move-in day. Though it will make life much easier because things don't always go as planned for me. (buying ram separately to save money, and also need a zeroshock sleeve) I'm just looking at the cost and overall picture. After 2-3 years, both video cards will probably be about the same playing future games. And nmcbean says it plays GW decently (btw, what med or high settings?)

ISTNC is also offering a $50 discount for the current model, and I don't need to bt because I've already bought a dongle (though I dislike having a bt light that doesn't work)

Well, there is the fact that current benchmarks (overclocking both cards) show a 25-33% increase on the X700 over the 6600... but that's just the numbers speaking. O:-)

Either one will play Guild Wars on high... smilepak, THE ASUS KING, plays it on his Z71V all the time, and he's said its not only quiet and cool, but it also plays it on max graphics. By the way, I do know how intensive GW is... I own it too.

I'm surprised you can run it at such high resolution and details. The review benchmarks would have you think otherwise...

I'll just assume you are taking about the situation where you purchased the z71v and a few months later the z70v came out. But my situation is that I am making a conscious choice between two models, the z70v or z70va.

Okay, if you want a better GPU and internal bluetooth get the refresh if not, just get the current one, not a tough choice. Just ask yourself:
Do you want to play games at higher settings?
Do you want to have bluetooth?

As I said, I already have a bluetooth dongle. There is also cost, timing issues. It's not an easy choice.
Okay, even easier....Do you want a stronger GPU to play games at better settings and be able to play more future games?

Hopefully I don't end up playing games all day at my dorm, so the weaker GPU may be a deterrent for me. I just asked Rick and he says I probably won't recieve the z70va by Aug. 19th. So I'm sticking to the z70v.
