Why not just check out Ebay and look for an external floppy drive for your 8100. What you are suggesting wont work

Set up the desktop to share the root on the floppy. Connect the machines to the same network. You should be able to run programs on the laptop from the desktop floppy

And you can use it when not connected to the network.

Better than a USB floppy would eb a floppy for the tecra 8100. They come in an external casing that has a special plug that gooes right beneatht he PCMCIA card slots. YOu can even pop the floppy out of the housing and swap it with the optical drive. You should be able to find one for the tecra 8100/8200 on ebay for about $20 or less. Stay away from the ones for older tecras (like the 520) as the had a similar plug, but it is bigger (I used to have a 520 and my 8100 and know so from experience). I'm not sure about the 8000's floppy drive, but I can assure you that you will be able to at least put it in the modular slot.

You would need file transfer cables that connect thru serial or parallel ports. Then if Windows 95 or better is running on both desktop and laptop, you could use Direct Cable connection. Go to Start - Programs - Accessories - Communications and find the shortcut Dirct Cable Connection. First, you will have to enable file sharing on both computers which you do through the Network icon in Control Panel. And also have the correct protocols in your Network connections. The Windows help should assist you in setting these up.
