Dell Inspiron 6000 : Dell Ultrasharp 2405FPW support and noise

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I recently bought a 24" dell ultrasharp screen with 1920x1200 resolution. I am planning to buy a dell inspiron 6000 and have several questions concerning the video support of the 24" screen :

[1] does the chipset with integrated graphic card (GMA 900) perfectly support 1920x1200 on the external 24" screen or do I have to choose an independant X300 video card ?

[2] does the X300 video card have any DVI support ?

[3] everything else being the same, does a configuration with a X300 make more noise than a configuration with GMA900 ?

And a final concerning the hard disk :

[4] Does an Inspiron 8600 shipped with a 7200 RPM hard disk make more noise than with a 5400 RPM HD, and if yes how noticable is this difference ?

[5] What kind of HD is the 7200 RPM HD that can be chosen on dell's website when configuring an Inspiron 6000 : an Hitachi 7K60 ?

Thanks in advance,
Sophie

I can only answer your first question based on my experience wih the Dell 24" and my Lat D610. Yes. the Intel Media Accelerator 900 can power both the internal screen and 24" at native resolution. However, the performance tends to suffer as videos look quite bad playing back on the 24". This is not a fault with the monitor as videos look great when the 24" is hooked up to a desktop running an ATI X800 XL with DVI-D. I would get the X300 if I were you..

Hope this helps.

My 7K60 is an Hitachi.

Just a heads-up: the 6000 (I or D) does not have a DVI-out plug. The 6000's own internal screen is friggin gorgeous, but the only external ports are VGA or S-video.

I got my 6000D (yes, 128MB) a couple of weeks ago, and was a little disappointed to see no DVI. I am still googling to see if there is a mod/upgrade possible

I would highly suggest getting a laptop w/ DVI if you plan to use it with the 2405FPW. I tried my 6000D with it and it was ugly since there is lots of signal degradation at 1920x1200 over analog.
