I’m in the process of buying one myself, after a lot of research and comparison.
Circuit City aka The Source has it for $999.00 CAD including a Canon printer, web cam and Word Perfect.

Intel Celeron M370-1.5GHz, 512MB memory,60GB(5400RPM) HD, DVD+/- Dual, 14WXGA. Wi-Fi,

I have heard and read that there is a Static Problem with Toshibas. I guess the casing is too tight and it is causing a ‘’short’’ which could affect your computer components i.e. hard drive, video card etc.
Has anyone experienced any of these? Especially the ones with Intel P4.

I decided against the Acer Aspire AS5002WLMi, because it looks to plasticy-cheap and the screen is too shiny. No Video out either. Good deal though for the AMD Turion 64 bit processor.

Your input and comments are appreciated.
thanks
THe static problem you mentioned was a few particular models (the A70/75)
that were released early this year or before. The issue has been addressed by toshiba so that all of these laptops are being fixed for free to the user.

yeah g00nter is right the static issue is not present on the m50 model

I hope this message can save you $100.00 (CDN)

Futureshop in Canada has a $100 promotion for Toshiba M50-MX2 on this week's flyer. 512MB DDR2, 60GB 5400rpm HDD, Dual Layer Multi format DVD+/-RW 5X DVD-RAM, ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M graphics, Wireless b/g.

$899.99 Canadian, sounds a great deal to me. It might even be o/c to 2.0gHz Celeron M with pinmod.

I went into staples with the futureshop offer and they matched it.I got 100 bucks off my original purchase.
A dif issue, how do guys handle the sales reps at staples, best buy or futureshop?I actually left futureshop the other day.I was ready to be a dvd/vcr and the idiot kept hammering me oon the extended warranty after I made it very clear I was not interested in it.He was still yapping as I walked away.

I picked up a M50-MX2 from futureshop a few days ago when they were running a friends & family sale. I got it for929.99+taxes-100 gift card+FREE 512 pc4200 RAM(30 MIR)=$964.39
The only problem is the RAMs don't run at dual channel model as it suppose to be. the original Ram is SAMSUNG DDR2 533 512M, the add-in one is AZON DDR2 533 512M. Any ideas?

i just walk away, let them keep yapping. or if it is at Futureshop, since they work partially on commission tell them you wont be buying from them because of that and start to walk away...

i believe to get dual channel it has to be matched ram and since they are different and would have different timings...

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I'm looking to buy a laptop for the first time but don't really know much about them. One that caught my eye is the Toshiba M50-MX5 which is on sale for $1,499.99 (CAN) at Future Shop in Canada. These are the specs according to the flyer:
  • Intel Centrino 750
  • 512MB DDR2 Memory **Free upgrade to 1GB**
  • 100GB (5400RPM) Hard Drive
  • Dual-Layer DVD Burner
  • 128MB (shared) Intel GMA 900
  • Wireless-G Networking

I will mainly be using the laptop for internet use and DVD watching. Is this a good laptop for me? I would appreciate your input. Thank you.

it would be a great machine if that is what you are doing, for gaming you would have to look elsewhere but for just surfing, email, movies, and word... the machine you got spec'd out there will more than do it.

Thanks for your response. I just have another dumb question - is Centrino the same as Pentium M?....because on the flyer it says Centrino, but on the store's website it says Pentium M.
pentium m is the processor, centrino is the combination of an intel chipset, intel wireless, and a pentium m processor all in one machine, so you dont have a worry there.

OK great, thank you.

One more thing and I apologize for not mentioning it earlier, but the screen is a 14" widescreen. Now after looking at some other laptops, 14" is the smallest I've seen. Is that too small for watching movies?
depends, i dont think so personally. it depends on how you are planning to watch a movie. from across a room its too small but in your lap its a great size.
