How to Clean the 2 Fans Near Heatsink (9860 model)

Ok. So today I decided to clean my laptop for the first time after about 7 months. In the process, I freed a lot of dust bunnies.

I was trying to clean the 2 fans right accross from the heatsink but couldn't find a way to remove the top panel and thoroughly clean them. Anyone with better luck?

I ran across the same thing and I was thinking this would require taking the entire case apart or removing the keyboard and working in that way. Maybe Pat can chime in on this one.

The best way to clean them is to remove the heatsink and blast the air through the fans. It is impossible to clean them any better without taking the system apart.

FYI, if you did this and be sure to cover your LCD with a piece of cloth or paper. I blasted canned air thru the 2 fans. When I opened up the laptop, all dust from the fan ended up on the LCD. But it was easy to just wipe off the LCD with clean microfiber cloth.

By the way, I did not reapply the artic silver after removing the heatsink. The laptop seems fine without reapplication. The temp even drop about 1-2 C. I am now idling at around 42-44 vs 44-46, and this is summer!

I wonder if I need to reapply AS the next time I do major cleaning again.

to Pat for such prompt response

I would assume the AS5 is a good thing. You may notice that the temperature difference was just because of blowing out the fans provided more air. How hot these processors get, I wouldn't risk leaving the AS5 off it.

I am going to pick some up to have handy when I do mine.

Good info Pat. Thanks.

hypersonic applies artic silver so i guess if it comes off and if you re apply it it wont void it. And i dont think by cleaining your machine should void your warranty as it will help it. Idont know that just my 2c

You are quite right, Laptop<3. There are parts of the machine that are user-upgradeable. These include the heatsink, the memory, hard drive etc. Now, if someone were to...let's say...attempt to change the screen on their own, that voids the warranty. Taking apart the chassis to see how pretty the insides are...voids the warranty.
We ask that everyone use a small amount of common sense when performing upgrades on their systems, or performing preventative maintenance.

What I meant was I kept the artic silver applied by the factory. I did not wipe it off or anything. It stays there. When I pull out the heatsink, there wasn't any resistance at all. I could see the artic silver stayed on the chip as well as the part that came in contact with it. It wasn't goopy or anything. It was a solid thin layer. So I did not reapply the artic silver thinking that it was unecessary to reapply since it was still good.

But maybe Pat can clarify if I should reapply AS or when.

Ah... ok. I only stated that because I know a lot of people have a habit of wiping the processor clean when they are removing the heat sink. I just wanted to make sure you hadn't left it clean.
