Well I took your advise and called tech support. I spoke to Brian and he said he believes that it is a down clocked 9600 pro. The underclocked the memory so it would not over heat. Well it didn't work for me because my 736 is going back mon for a refund. It can hardly make it through 3DMark2001SE. Kepps hesitating and I think the video card is overheating. I guess I went with the wrong company. Just to let you know I did download powerstrip and the core clock speed is 351 and the memory is 222.75.
I hope you do not experience the crap I'm going through, I cant believe that they let this thing leave there shop like this. Also the packing sucked........last 3DMark2001SE was 5660 and the control panel settings were set at high performance. Could not play comanche 4 either, kept hesitating.

Anyway thanks for the advice and maybe I'll try expressnotebooks
website , It really is a nice notebook if it would work properly.

Thanks Ronbo

Yeah I know I don't believe that myself. The Pro version has not come out yet. I returned the G736 back to mobileperipherals and went shopping at Internetishop.com. After speaking with Tony the sales rep I decided to go with the centrino model. Aopen 1557G. Pent M 1.6, 1 gig 333 mem, ATI Mob 9600 64 MB, Windows Home, Hitachi 5400 rpm hd 8 mb cache, 15 " XGA Screen
DVDR-RW Toshiba Drive 6lbs, 1.26 " (H) with battery, close to 5 hrs battery life. I really wanted another 736, but once I had a bad experience with one ,I decided to try something else. This is my 4th laptop and 3rd centrino. This is the best one that I have owned. Pretty fast. I wanted the 1.7 but they ran out. They also told me that the 7200 rpm Hdd did not operate properly with the 1557G. ABS Compters have the same one ( F2) they did not run out of 1.7's and they said that they tested it with the 7200 rpm and did not discover any problems. Anyway I saved money with overnight shipping it cost me $1,883. The core speed of the 9600
is 344.25 and the memory is 209.25. 3DMark2001SE - 9614 and
3DMark03 was 2614. PC Mark 2002 - CPU 5293, Memory 5453 and HDD - 730. I'm going to run Sandra when I get a chance. Next notebook will probably be a desktop high performance.

Have a happy holiday.

Hey Guys,
I'm going back to school, and looking into possible laptops I could get, all the name brand laptops are generations behind in technology compared to desktops, and if you want something up to date it'll cost you 5 grand (Canadian Dollars). But then I stumbled across the ECS G736, barebone laptop sold at www.atic.ca, a local store, it's selling for $1250CND, and all you need to do is pop in a CPU/Ram/HD. So for $1850 I could get a decent laptop, capable of blowing away most desktop computers!!! That's like, $1412 US dollars. It's only the 2.6C P4, 512 DDR333, and 5400RPM 40Gig, but to upgrade to 3.2C and 7200RPM would cost a little more, worth the performance I guess... But benchmarks show the 5400RPM drives aren't that much slower than the 7200's. Anyways, this laptop setup has got to be the fastest for your money on EARTH. And there are NO reviews of the laptop yet, it took me a month to find this forum... Now that I have, I think I've learned a lot more about it. Syntax also repackages the ECS G736, btw.

So, the screen has a 50ms response time, instead of 25ms, oh well, no biggy, not like you're paying top dollar. But the res is 1400x1050? that's kinda cool.

Wild, you're the man of the hour right now.. Nobody else on earth has made a review, in english, that I've been able to find, if you can put up a review page, you would be the first on earth to do so, title it with the Syntax, ECS and whatever other companies repackage it, and I'm sure you'll get thousands of hits, you will be our god. You'll set the basepoint for all G736 reviews, this is a revolutionary notebook, never has a notebook's video card performance been so close to a desktops, the performance gap has closed, and that's why this notebook is so special.

I'm gonna get this notebook by the end of January, it's gonna just rock.
If there's no review of this notebook yet, I'll make one. Is it overclockable? Nobody really overclocks laptops, but if you could increase the FSB that'd be cool(or hot...).

But Wild, maybe you could entertain some questions for us please?:
The ECS page says the 15" LCD can go UXGA, that's 1600x1200 isn't it? It can't do that.. they lie.

Also, it says it handles up to 5400RPM drives, but you have a 7200RPM in there?

Oh ya, and how's the sound? The G732 had a noise problem, hopefully they fixed it.

Alright. that's all.... for now.. ;o)

ttyl.

Well all I can say is i'm very very satisfied......the 736 is awesome...even the one you have mentioned you cant beat for the money...dude the fsb is 800mhz and i have been playing counterstrike 1.6 with no problems at all no ghosting either..........the sound is sufficiant for a laptop...I use headsets when playing cs anyway..........this thing is rock solid...I wouldnt trade it for any other laptop

ECS offers the new Dothan CPU now.
Sounds like a sweet laptop Wild.

I know the FSB is 800mhz after their little Quadpump, so effective speed is 800mhz, but I mean the bus speed, it's 200mhz, is there anyway to get above 200mhz? I know you'll be running asynchronously, but that's gonna happen anyways. I know it doesn't matter, because overclocking a laptop's kinda silly, but what kinda settings do you get in the BIOS settings? If you do a review for this laptop, don't forget to take a picture of the BIOS settings available.

Have you run 3dMark2001SE and 2003 or any other benchmarks yet? Sandra's HD, MEM, CPU benchmarks? I haven't heard many numbers from you. I know it doesn't matter that much, but "rock solid" isn't that descriptive.

I wonder why that guy got ~5900 3DMark2001SE scores, if that's what this laptop gets, then I can see why it's so cheap.. ~2900 in 2003 isn't bad though.

Oh well, someone out there who's put this thing through an arsenal of benchmarks, please post some scores, and your synopsis, your opinion is important to us.

I wonder how well NFS Underground would work on this. ;o)
I'll be completing a full benchmark with 3DMark 2003 and Sandra sometime this week. My 736 consists of a 3.2GHz CPU, 1024 333MHz RAM, 60GB 5400RPM HD, 128MB ATI 9600.

We'll see what happens.

thx man for your help. ill keep in touch

I got mine!

Hey Guys,

Yup, it's the best alright, had it for 5 days and I'm quite pleased with it.

I ran 2001 and 2003 quickly, all default settings and some things running in the background, MSN and ICQ. Wasn't the greatest test bed but off the bat it got about 9600 2001 3dMarks, and 2600 for 2003. Not bad for a laptop I'd say. Some tweaking and I'd probably break 10000 no sweat.
Core/mem on the radeon is like 351/235? I forget, something like that. I wonder what happens if you crank the memory speed up... Burn something up for sure.

I only got the 2.6C, and 512DDR33 Crucial, 5400RPM 40GB hitachi 2MB buffer ;o(. Where'd you get the 7200RPM drive from? They're hard to get.

Anyways, I'll definately have to write up a review on this thing.
Everything's great so far.
Worst thing about it, is that the integrated wireless is garbage, the signal quality degrades and disconnects when I walk across the house, I pop in a PCMCIA USR wireless and it's rock solid, full speed across the house. Other than that, everything is great. The sound has some hiss, and interference, but even my SBLive 5.1! has that.. Going digital fixes that.

Anyways, that's a few for now, more later...

Was well worth my $2100 CND

Does it come with built in .11b? Is it mini-pci? Can you put a mini-pci .11g card in there?

Yup, 802.11B

Under device manager it says
"WirelessLAN PRISM3 IEEE802.11b WM168 USB Module"

If you remove the keyboard, you'll see the addon module above the PCMCIA slot, and it has a little antenna connected to it.

Right now I'm using it actually, on the University Wireless network. They have 802.11B in all the buildings almost. The quality isn't that great, in some weak areas that my USR can work, the integrated won't work. And when it does work, it only gets 66% signal whereas others have above 90%, but it's integrated, so it's more than you can ask for ;o)

Something interesting about the laptop, when you're on AC, the CPU runs quick, when you're on battery, it goes from 50% to 66% performance. I can't find out where you make it keep up it's performance..

Still testing this baby out.
It's sweet!

I think this company may be owned by Sager. Like MrMsyvc said, the drivers are linked from Sagers site.
Hi everyone,

I ordered it dec 31 and I received it this monday ( 12 jan). I got it at etccomputer.ca

It's a ECS G736

Cpu: 3.0 fsb800
Ram: 512m ddr400
Harddrive: 60gig 5400rpm
Optical drive: dvd/cdrw combo

I really love it! Runs great in games like Battlefield 1942, Call of Duty but wont work in C&C Generals. I dont know if its the driver. I checked on the website ecs.com.tw and the only recent driver dated from august. I checked on the sager website and I dont know wich driver to download.
i'm thinking about getting this laptop and was wondering if anyone has tried using the vga output.. i want to output to a monitor while i'm at my desk and run at 1600x1200, but i read on ecs's website (i think) that the vga output only goes to 1280.

so can someone try to output to a monitor at 1600x1200 and let me know if it works?? and if so, is the image clear?
