Issues with a Gateway 7510gx

Bought this laptop for my girlfriend, but...you know.

Anyways, I loaded up Everquest (Don't Hate me, old habits die hard) and I'm not sure how to explain it but the game just runs bad. It feels as if I'm running in Slow motion, like it's running at half speed. Every 15 or 30 seconds, it will jump to normal speed for about a second then back down to the sluggish half speed. Feels as though the game is to much for the system but I know this isn't the case.

I turned down all particle effects, running it on low graphics and the same thing still happens.

Any ideas? Driver maybe?

Just bought it from Best Buy, maybe 4 days ago. Any help would be most apperciated.

Thanks.

Have you check on my computer how much Mhz does it appear there?

Select my computer with one left click and then right click choose properties and check the INFO

also, are u running the notebook with desktop settings instead of laptop / notebook settings ? that slower the computer maybe it is not your case but it could be,

Let me know

Hmm odd never noticed it says 787mhz....

Odd it changes 787..now is says 2.39ghz?

Is there a way to lock it in at one speed?

Go to the power useage in Control Panel (the name escapes me at the moment, it will be the battery icon) make sure you have it set to 'Always On'.

Yep thanks a ton guys. It worked.

By chance will this cause any ill-effects? Should I only switch this on when I want to play a game, or is it okay to always leave it like this?

Thanks again, this forum is a wonderful resource.

Just eats the battery faster, because when it was changing the cpu speed, it was doing that to conserve battery. You're not going to damage anything, just need to charge more often.

Old games will have these problems because they check the CPU speed when started, and they will adjust to work at those settings. New games know how to check the CPU model and will work with the "mhz change" enabled. I had this problem with UT and SOF2, but on mine they would run extra fast.

When plugged into an AC source, you could choose that setting and leave it(if a little extra power usage is not an issue). With the SpeedStep(change) on it will run cooler though. So you will find out that the best way to fix it is by getting new games.

So that's not a 7510GX issue.

Turn off PowerPlay for the GPU.

My problem

I recently recieved my 7510gx and its amazing! runs hl2 and source great! but thats when its pluged in... im having the same issue as the person who origanally started the post did. Even after i changed the power scheme to "always on" my mhz still reports as 787mhz, not the normal 2.39 mhz that it should be running at ! its driving me nuts trying to figure out what the problem is... any help would be awesome

looks like Arima didnt change anything. when on battery, the W730-K8 would lock at 800, and so its doing the same with this (the W730-K8X).

hmm I think i heard something that the latest AMD64 CPU driver may allow you to override that.

when im on battery on my 7426gx with the new amd drivers if it needs more juice i can see my cpu bump up to 2.4ghz. Try new drivers.

Where do i get those drivers? im guessing just the gateway webesite? and im assuming update the porcessor drivers? thanks for the quick responses!

Last night I checked this out myself. When I was on battery and set to Always On, the Windows Properties reported 800MHz and so did AMD's PowerNow Dashboard. Then I used ClockGen to get the multiplier to 10X and the voltage to 1.4V(if you try the same thing, make sure you set the voltage to 1.4 before increasing the multiplier, and when going back, be sure that you reduce the multiplier first and then the voltage, the CPU at its max speed won't have enough power when its fed .95V and it will crash). AMD PowerNow Dashboard reported the CPU at 100% and the right voltage, but the odd thing is that windows reported 800MHz.

I don't think it's a problem caused by Arima's design. Their system is doing the right thing by telling the OS that it's running on batteries. It's the driver's/window's job to control PowerNow.

Hey guys, i downloaded that program to monitor the cpu usuage and it sais im running at 33% regardless of what programs im running... so i updated the driver and still nothing. And on top of that the power monitor for my cpu sais its running at max @ 1.4 volts, not 2.4 like oachalons. i cant seem to get it to run at full power when not pluged in! its driving my crazy haha
post #16 of 25
Mobile Athlon 64 cpus use 1.4V when at max speed, and .95V when at its lowest speed.
ohh ok, thanks for clearing that up, i wasnt sure. But that just brings me back to the power settings.. how do i keep it from reverting down to a lower power setting?
If you go to power settings and change the power profile to "always on" or "Presentation", it will disable Cool N' Quiet (Speed Step is Intel's implementation of power management, and PowerNow! was AMD's original implementation). Once that is disabled, your CPU will run at the max speed all the time.
see i did set it too "always on" but when i unplug it and go into system its still saying the 787 mhz... what else could i do?
Sorry bud, can't help you on that one. I reproduced that problem on my laptop with both the latest and second to last AMD CPU Drivers. I haven't looked any further into the problem though.

I did find a solution but it's not the best one for non-advanced users.
