Question for Ferrari 4005 Owners

Thread Starter
Hello,

Thanks for answering this question for me, browsed around and im not sure if this has ever been directly answered. But i was wondering how the Ferrari 4005 is in regards to driver support. For the graphics card, is it it's own module? Im wondering this because if it is than i can just download and use the drivers off ati.com. Or are all the drivers for the laptop only available from Acer engineers? Reason i ask is my friend ordered a laptop where he had the unfortunate mistake of getting a IGP 128mb ATI card and cant play Battlefield 2 because the drivers that the manufacturer wants to provide is more than 1 1/2 years old (even though ATI updated theirs last month).

thanks for the help all

yeah, you can turn it off...I ended up uninstalling the ferrari startup.exe thingy. I couldn't stand that sound & additional boot time to start her up. <control panel- add remove software>

Other than that.... and the fact I need to reformat (I saw this earlier... any idea why Acer opted for Fat32 format????). I need to reformat my ferrari and it should run much faster after switching to NTFS...

Taelvin have a look at this url : http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/

With this tool you can install the latest official catalyst driver you can get from ATI without having to wait for Acer to repackage and release it.

Btw this works for all notebooks with radeon/mobility card from any manufacture, not just Acer's.

The Ferrari vrooomm sound is just a .wav file assigned to Windows "Start Windows" event so if you dont want it just disable it or change it to something else.

You don't need to reformat. Just use Windows Conversion Utility. It will convert your hard drive to NTFS without destroying your data. I recommend PartitionMagic but Windows converson utility will do the job.

So i take it that the answer to my question zanzida is a yes then? The x700 in the ferrari isnt its own module and can only run on acer released drivers, not on ati.com drivers (without this software that is)?

Sorry to sound impatient or anything, but do any of you ferrari owners plan on answering my question (the original thread question?!?) , its kinda important to my purchasing decision as to whether or not i will wait for the Asus Z70 refresh.

I have downloaded the ATI official drivers for MR X700 and X800, but Acer is not appearing at ATI's site as supported manufacturer. Tomorrow I will be able to test and check if the driver will be approved.
But I can tell you something, if it is not approved for the official ATI driver in hand, my guess is that it will be soon.

Unfortunately, official ATI mobility drivers do not support the Ferrari 4000. Only Acer has the official drivers for the Ferrari at this time. This could change but who knows.

The good news is that you are not with out options. You can download and use Omega Drivers which are modified ATI drivers. Or you can use the driver mod tool to take the official ATI drivers and fit them to the Ferrari.

I am using the latter on my computer. As such i got the 5-10% speed bump using the modded official ATI drivers. Everything runs great.

As for the Asus refresh. Hey, it's a nice computer with an equilivant gpu. I would say performance would be the same between that and the Ferrari. So it's up to you if you want to wait.

I downloaded the new official ATI Catalyst 5.7s... then I got Mobility Modder from http://www.driverheaven.net and modded them. They installed and work perfect with my Ferrari. Better than the stock Acer ones. I think that answers your question?

Yes that does indeed answer my question guys, thanks for the quick response. One more question while i have your attention though, some of the people in the Asus forum in discussions on Ferrari 4000 vs. z70 Refresh have commented that the build quality is better on the Asus. I have read your reviews and you all seem pretty confidant in the build of the ferrari but i was wondering what you guys have to say about this? Is it a brand issue?
I believe the consensus is that Asus makes some pretty solid laptops. I haven't heard of anything else that says diffrently. And they definitely have some nice looking machines, though the Z71 looks pretty ugly.

As for Acer, i heard that they weren't as good a few years ago quality wise, but have been getting better since then. The machines that they have now are definitely up to par with anything else out there. As for the Ferrari it's pretty much their Flagship computer right now so i doubt they would skimp on the build quality since Ferrari would probably pull their license if Acer started using shoddy parts.

From my personal experience with my F$errari, it is a solid machine. It's run everything i've thrown at it, from HL2 to video encoding, movie watching and web surfing. It feels sturdy and there isn't any flex in the case. I'm overall very happy with it.

sweet! how? I don't have PM, so I'd opt for the Windows conversion... is it built into XP already? also... once completed.... will it operate just as good as reformatting via NTFS?

I noticed even through disabling a gag load of stuff via msfconfig, it still takes slightly longer to boot to desktop vs. other notebooks I have...

Thank a bunch!

Cheers...

yeah I agree with pretty much what Rustican said there

use Microsoft Bootvis or a defragger that can move the startup files to decrease boot time...

as for converting...
type...

convert C: /fs:ntfs
convert D: /fs:ntfs

simple

you guys ROCK! thanks for the tips... totally n00b when it comes to this kinda stuff. for optimal performance, where would you suggest moving the boot files to decrease boot time?

Techn9ne, When you converted to NTFS, are you still able to use the Acer recover utility to get back the factory settings?
