Fujitsu s6231 vs. IBM t42

I'm looking for a notebook for college. I'll use it for internet browsing and word processing. I am not a big gamer but I occasionally play games. I'll be carrying it around to classes. I'll use it outside so I need a good screen (Do glossy screens work better?). I want it to be silent, I'd prefer it doesn't get too hot.

I narrowed my searches to these two machines. Now I can't decide between the two...
PLease help me decide!
Thank you.

I've owned the IBM T42 and it's probably the best notebook I've ever used in terms of build quality.. the keyboard is perfect, there's no flex anywhere on the machine, very sturdy lid, quiet, and much cooler than any other laptop I've used. The screen is so-so, and for that price, you can get a better spec'd machine from some one else..but hey, you pay for that good build. The version I had used the Ati Radeon 9600 w/64mb dedicated.. ran games pretty well (at the time at least, last year).

I tried out the S6231 at Fry's Electronics a bit.. the keyboard is definitely not as good, there's some flex. there's no S series that comes with a dedicated GPU. however you get the option of having a glossy XGA screen, or a non glossy SXGA screen. something you don't find too often. Fujitsu has one of the best glossy screens out there.

personally, I'll choose the T42.

A good keyboard is very important for me... It's like the primary thing I look for in a notebook. But I agree with you, it's not about specs... Heat+noise are important factors when buying a notebook.

Btw, is t42 heavy to carry around all day? I know it's over 5 lbs, but some reviewers mentioned it feels a lot lighter.
any more suggestions guys?

really? I thought the IBM t42 is right around 5 lbs. It really is not that heavy, I carry it to and from work all the time. It is definitely lighter and a lot easier to carry than my 15.4" notebook (6.6 lbs). The keyboard takes a few hours to get used to if u are used to keyboards on other laptops. But the build quality is really excellent. I dont know about the fujitsu, but I do recommend the t42 if ur not gaming much.

btw: In regards to noise and heat, it doesnt really get that hot and i've never heard the fan turn on (although, the room I work in is not entirely quite.)

its slightly heavier than 5lbs, maybe like 5.2? as for weight and all that issue.. i think that's something that'll vary depending on person.. I thought it was kinda heavy.. but you got some guys who say lugging a 6lbs Z70 is not bad.. I'd like to get those nice 3lbs 12"noteobok.. but they're just too small.. plus you sacrifice performance for the cost you pay.. so for me.. the preferred size is at least 14. and no more htan 15'4.

Hey Have you considered i700m? Very light and good value. I think it is a great machine for college

Yes, I did consider i700m, but the keyboard is too small. I also read some reviews about a microphone issue. I will use internet telephony often.. this makes it impossible for me to use 700m as my primary notebook.

Besides the screen is very glossy, and I will use the computer outside, which may cause some problems. Isn't 12" too small?

BTW, how is t42 with games?

If you want a laptop that has a great build quality, nothing beats IBM, i dont think any laptop can survive as long as IBM, i have a P2 thats really really old and its been droped, stepped on and everything you can imagine and it still works great I think the IBM is your best bet, you will love it

The t42 will play all the games out there, but not great.
