Acer Aspire 1694WMLI - Quick input!

Acer Aspire 1694WMLi

Upgraded to 1GB RAM.

I have not had this laptop to long; I had bought an Evesham Quest Roma T37, but returned that due to chassis problems. My last proper laptop was an Acer TravelMate 244LM (Celeron 2.6Ghz), so I will be comparing to that.

Looks.
The case is nice looking, slim and neatly trimmed. I like the way the WiFi and Bluetooth lights come on when in use.

Build Quality.
The build quality seems to be good. The case feels sturdy and everything feels solid. The Silver finish is quite smooth and feels nice.

Screen.
The screen is a 15.4" 'CrystalBright' widescreen TFT.
Running @ 1280 x 800 the image quality is excellent, very clear with vibrant colours. I can't see any dead pixels and have test using 'Dead Pixel Buddy'. As this is a CrystalBrite screen it is very glossy and looks great! The screen is a massive improvement on my old Acer, and similar to the Evesham Screen.

Keyboard & Trackpad.
The keyboard is nice, all the usual buttons are there in an easy to find layout. The feels of the keyboard is smooth, much nicer than the Evesham 'clicky' keyboard and very similar to my Old Acer. The trackpad is located slightly away from the keyboard, it's smooth and the buttons feel like they'll with stand a good amount of presses. Overall the keyboard and Trackpad are a massive improvement on the Evesham.

Performance.
I've not had too much time to test the performance, but it feels a lot quicker than my old Acer. Windows loads fast and is very responsive. 3Dmark 2003 set at default setting returned a result of 6297. Whilst it was running the picture quality was excellent, very smooth and clear. This is faster than the Evesham.

In normal use the laptop is silent, this is a bonus as the old Acer was VERY noisy. When running 3DMark the fan could be heard but it was only slight. A lot quieter than the old Acer and quieter than the Evesham.

Sound is quite loud for a laptop, a lot louder than the old Acer, and similar to the Evesham. I would be happy watching a DVD at this sound level.

The Wireless detected and connected to my network without any problems, performance and distance seem to be as good as the old Acer with a Belkin 54G PCMCIA Card and the Evesham's Wireless.

Specification.

Intel Pentium M 760 CPU - 2.0Ghz Centrino
Microsoft(r) Windows(r) XP Home Edition
512MB DDR RAM
100GB Hard Drive
128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X700
15.4" Widescreen TFT display (1280 x 800)
Built in Wireless LAN and Bluetooth
DVD/CD-RW/ Dual Layer DVD-RW drive
10/100 LAN & Modem v92 56k
Built in audio & speakers
USB2.0, VGA, PCI-Express Card Slot.
Weight 2.8kg

Overall I'm pleased with the laptop.

It cost's a bit more than the Evesham (£250.00).. But at the moment I feel that it is worth the extra. I would have no problems using the laptop's keyboard; it feels well built and looks smart.

Any questions please ask.

It's not that big !! It feels and looks great !!
Sits well on my knee.. actually feels lighter than the Evesham and the Travelmate 244LM ( I'm not saying it is... just feels... better !)

Can you play Half Life 2 on this system, with 1gig RAM, X700 128mb etc.

I haven't got HalfLife 2, but I :

3DMark 2005 @ Default Setting = 2378

Does that help ?

TomT - I'm not really that much into numbersXD

I think I'll go with the Acer Travelmate 8104, but then I'll lose the super-nice crystalbrite-screen But I think that that notebook can play Half Life 2, even though I'm not 100% sure...

I'll be trying Far Cry later !

If theres a demo for Half Life 2, point me to it and I;ll let you know how it goes
post #8 of 54
TomT -Thank you for taking the time to help me out

You can find a demo here: http://www.webhallen.com/prod.php?id=16965 at the bottom of that page, there is someting called "demo something somethign"...

Also, please try Far Cry and see if that runs at allXD

I really want the Aspire 1694...can you tell me, how is it to watch DVD-movies on it? Is there lots of ghosting (I really hope not)?

I could play Half Life 2 somewhat good on my Ferrari 3400 with the ATI Mobility 9700 128mb, 512 RAM, 2.0ghz, 4200rpm...and the 1694 with the X700 should be a lot better, and with 1gig ram, 5400rpm...hmm...interesting.

The demo is 751MB !! should have it in about 45mins..

How do you benchmark HalfLife 2 and Far Cry ??

If you can tell me how to do that, I'll post back the results.

DVD play is very nice, the picture is very clear and smooth.. I replayed a scene from Spiderman 2, where the car flies through the cafe window.. Looked great !

Sound is quite loud, fine for me to watch a film.. Battery life seems good, Acer's power management is simple to use, allowing you to specify just what you want running !!

I'm not sure how to benchmark things at all, sorry...

Sounds nice with the DVD, looking forward to see it myself

Are there any draw backs or negative things about the screen? I've heard the viewing angle is pretty bad, but how bad is it really? I have actually watched the screen of the Aspire 1692 a long while ago, and I don't remeber it to be that bad at all...

Any ways, I'm sure this notebook will be just fine, or at least better than my old Ferrari.

I've not noticed any bad things about the screen.. I just keep looking and thinking WOW !!

You do get a bit of reflection, but its a glossy screen !! and it doen't bother me

I'm VERY picky.. if I'm not happy I'd send it back ! But I do like this

Can these specs. really be accurate? Can anyone verify this?

http://www.dustin.se/dacsaportal/?ProdID=5010084298

Is it really 5400rpm? I sure hope so...

I'm sure you'll like it !!

I've just tried Half Life 2 on my PC (to get a feel for it) and will try it on the laptop to see what the difference is..

On the 3DMark scores the laptop is not far behind my PC !!

My PC is a Pentium 4 @ 3.4Ghz, 1Gb RAM, 128MB Nvidia 6610XL

I think the game will play similar on the laptop !!
TomT -So you think that game will at least work somewhat ok on the 1694? That's nice=)

Looking forward to hear from you soon with comments on Half Life 2 on your Aspire!

Half Life Demo Version.

I found that I could set the screen in 1 of 3 different modes: 4:3 - 16:9 - 16:9

I set it to 16:10 @ 1280 x 800, I let HL2 decide on the quality settings, although it did pick high !!

What can I say ! FANTASTIC Image quality is great, smooth and fluid.. No jerking, stuttering.. very Nice.

I played through the 2 level demo, and it played as well as my PC. The sound was loud, you could hardly hear the fan..

Very pleased to see it work as well as the PC, everything was fast, smooth and the screen makes it all look 'sooo nice'

I think you will be happy with this

I'm more of a Unreal Tourny player.. This will be great !!!

Hope that helps..
