How Fast Your DVD Burn?

I like to do some comparison so can some of you guys post your DVD drive if its Sony or NEC. What Kind of Media did you burn it on (memorex, TDK, GQ, etc..). Also what program you burn it with. Most importantly how fast does it take you DVD to burn a full DVD+R.

Sony DVD (update firmware)
Nero Burning Rom
Memorex 8x DVD+/-R
Burn Full DVD in 15 min.

Sony DVD (updated)
DVDShrink with Nero
Memorex 8x DVD+R
The actual burn takes 5-10 minutes, but copying it to my hard drive takes around 30. Usually entire process takes between 30-40 minutes.

I have the Sony DVD burner, I use it pretty much just to make copies of my DVD's so I can take em with me and not worry about lugging around the originals. I use two programs, Slysofts's anydvd which disables region code and security, and CloneDVD2 because it is simple to use, and pretty fast, so far the best app I have used to date. It gives plenty of options to output to. I ripped Napoleon Dynamite in 18 minutes and it took 11 Minutes to burn it to a Sony DVD+RW at 4X.

Total time was 29 Minutes.

hmm.... your 4x burn faster than my 8x.... I burn data file with nero showing it being burn at 8x and it took me 15 min to burn 4.4gb. I know there's a lot of issue with sony DVD+/-R burning not with the actual speed... I also know its a liteon rebadge but has anyone solve the issue on why it burn so slow comparing it to other 8x dvd burner? Also please continue to post more on how fast your dvd burn I would like more comparison thanks.

I think the speed depends on the media. I have the Sony burner and use Dynex (very cheap). It burns the media at 4X, which takes about 15 minutes.

The burner on my 9300 is an NEC, and it burned Fuji Film DVD+R in 10 minutes.

i burn a 4.8gig 4x dvd in about 10-12 mins with my sony dvd rewriter.. i was wondering how fast an 8x one would be.. by the way i use nero 6

I you dont have a modified firmware you wont be able to burn video dvd's at 8x for the most part. Riplock keeps the drive from spinning up while watching dvd's but the side effect is not being able to burn at 8x. Find a firmware that removes riplock and you can burn at 8x as long as the drive supports the mid codes but be prepared for the drive spinning up to 8x while watching dvd's.

hmmm.... since your 4x burn in 15 min and my 8x burn in 15 min you guys think I should call Dell and get them to replace my sony for NEC? or should i just get hack firmware to unlock riplock like RamIt says. BTW RamIT I know using modified driver will void my warranty .... is it just voiding the DVD burner warranty or my whole xpsGEN2 warranty?

You will void the warranty on the drive, but if there ever was any mechanical problems you could easily flash back to the original to deal with your warranty.

k thanks... I'll try that out in a week or so.

I have a non-riplock firmware but it still takes about 13 minutes for an 8x burn (Sony +Rs, the Sony DVD flashed with Liteon PSX3 fw).

I'd try different media first. 8X @ 15 minutes is really freaking slow.. I've never noticed a difference with any brand I've used (Verbatim, Sony, Maxell, Fuji and TDK). Then again I've never used the laptop to burn a DVD.. I use my desktop's Plex 716A 16X with Verbatim 16X media and a full disk always takes right around 5:10.

Dell recently released an updated firmware for your DVD writer's claiming faster writing speeds which i installed... there was a post about it too. I don't have any 8x capable DVD-Rs on me at the minute.. if anyone does have they had any luck with this? If so are you getting the full 8x (what make of dvd-r?) and what times are you getting to write a full dvd?

I'm curious, would I be able to make a DVD backup of my CD-based games and also be able to install from them?

Say, if I was to burn my copy of Battlefield 2 or UT2k4 or something like that to DVD, would I be able to install from and play from them?

I think it would be easier to have a single DVD than multiple CDs to install from after a reformat.

Thanks. And sorry if this doesn't belong.

This is OT, everything belongs.. or at least that's the way it usually goes. That's why the chances of someone actually talking on topic in a topic you visit are about slim and none.. I tried doing that with a Simpsons game for my daughter. I didn't feel like using all four CD's, so I crammed them on one DVD. Didn't work.. Good idea though.

Oh well, thanks anyway. Worth the thought though, unless someone know something we don't.
If they do then please post it. Changing out 4 or 5 CD's sucks arse. They need to just use DVD's from now on.

Why not just burn all the image in one DVD-R (say like cd 1-4 image (In Data Format)) and uses Daemon tool or any cd or dvd emulator to install the game. If they ask for CD2 just browse to the same CD and click on CD2, CD3, and CD4. That way you don't need to change CD everytime. Never try it though but been thinking about doing it to HL2 (5 cd). One more thing post your time for burning FULL DVD, maker of DVD, Program and firmware version. Thanks.
