8790 won't load OS

I've been reading this forum since I was comparison-shopping for notebooks and decided to buy my baby, but now that my Sager 8790-S is having major problems of its own, I decided it would be a good idea to register!

Hopefully someone can help me. This is the third time my computer starts up, loads Windows XP but at the load screen (with the logo and the load bar at the bottom) suddenly stops and flashes the Blue Screen of Death at me. By selecting the do not restart on system failure option, I can keep the blue screen which says the system failure is due to "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME." This leads me to believe that there's something seriously wrong with XP, and I'm hoping it isn't a hardware problem.

Here's what I've tried so far to solve the problem and why it didn't work:

Reformatting using Windows Install CD: Windows cannot delete the old OS off the partition, instead "an error occurs" and I am forced to exit setup.

Safe Mode or any other Mode in F8 menu: Windows won't load under any mode. Blue Screen of Death persists.

CHKDSK in Windows Recovery: Checks the HDD up to about 40% and then reports "one or more unrecoverable problems."

FORMAT in Windows Recovery: Seemed to work the first time I had this problem--Windows loaded normally as if there never was a problem, all my files and settings were as they were. The second and third time the problem arose, I tried FORMAT and it didn't work. So I'm not sure if it really helped the first time at all.

Unless the first time this happened I tried the right things in the right order, it seems as if my computer just up and decides to start normally. I don't see why sometimes it does and other times it doesn't.

Now this is the interesting part. The first time this happened, my computer had been turned off the day before with no issues. The last two times, my computer has locked up as I tried to open 2) a newly downloaded file on my computer (file contained no viruses as far as my scan could tell) and 3) a webpage. The cursor moves but nothing is clickable when this happens, forcing me to manually shut down.

I need to know if there's a simple solution for this. My computer may decide to load XP again, but the problem doesn't look like it's going to fix itself. Do I need to perform a clean format? I really really hope it's not a hardware issue, because my warranty is just about over, and I've already RMA'd my baby once. It seems like others with this model are having lots of hardware problems. Any help is greatly appreciated.

What exactly is your configuration? Are you using RAID-0 or RAID-1? Was the computer previously configured as RAID before you tried to reinstall Windows? Etc.......

I believe the RAID settings were off, as I have the original 60GB 7200RPM HDD, and if it matters, 2048 MB DDR SDRAM Dual Channel (2 x 1024 MB), and 3.4 Ghz P4 Processor. I didn't update or install/uninstall any Windows components soon before the problem began, and my drive hasn't been showing any signs or sounds of malfunction. I'll be the first to admit my knowledge is currently a little limited, so I haven't added or taken away and hardware or drastically changed major settings as of yet. If you need any more information please be specific, but as my computer is still not loading Windows I won't be able to answer everything.

When you next try to reinstal windows from scratch insure that you remove the partition, add the partition anew, and then format the drive. I believe that installation process will allow you to do all three activities.

Alright, I'll do that. Thanks for your help.

If you ask me I think your HD is bad.

That wouldn't surprise me. Is there any way of telling for sure besides waiting for an impending crash?

you can check promises or Hitachi's website for a tool to check the hard drive.

Ack, it's still not booting this morning. Would I be able to access the HD to back up my files if I plugged it into my desktop? I don't want to reformat until I have files backed up. But if there's no way this would work I don't want to void what warranty I have left. I have some really important stuff on this computer

If you have a 2.5 Inch external case, you could put the drive in that and attach via a USB cable. If you don't, you can buy a "Header" that allows you to attach the 2.5" drive to a normal IDE Cable.

Here is a link to a reasonably priced one: http://www.provantage.com/buy-7strt0...4-shopping.htm

I ordered a header that should be arriving in a few days. I'll let everyone know how things work out. Thanks again for helping. I plan on testing the hard drive once it's hooked up to my desktop.

If it's sporadic, you should try to physically remove your hard drive and then put it back in....i've had luck on ibm machines when they get that error in the past....

but unfortunately there's a good chance your drive is going bad....

I recieved the adapter and tried hooking my 8790's HD up to my desktop. It all works fine so far, but the PC is trying to boot my HD as the master. I see the diagram on the hardware that shows which pins I need to cover to change it to slave, but with what do I cover them?

Oh, and if my drive is indeed going bad, some recommendations for quality hard drives would be greatly appreciated. If this one dies I'm thinking of getting two to increase speed and storage space, so I'm looking for two HD's similar to the one I have now (60GB 7200 rpm) instead of one massive drive. And since I want them to LAST, reputation wins over price at this point.

For the jumpers go here: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/7k60/7k60jum.htm

You will need one of those little "bridges".

Bridge? I'm sorry but I don't know what that is @_@
post #17 of 34
Sorry, it is a small, normally black, plug sort of thing that has a metal inside and two holes and a plastic outside. It is used to "short" to pegs of an electrical connections such as the one on the "slave" side of the laptops's HDD. Stop by a local Radio Shack type of store and you should be able to gert one for about a quarter. Just explain what you need it for.. It's about 1/4" x 1/16" approximate.

Ok, great. That's exactly the type of thing I had pictured but I wasn't sure. Thanks for clarifying that for me.

My, I have so many questions! I have my drive hooked up to my PC successfully and it has been recognized. However, when I try to explore its files I am prompted to format. I can't get past this prompt. Won't formatting erase all the data?
Yes it will. Not sure what's up with that.
