8790 won't load OS - Page 2

Yeah, this one is really stumping me. I confirmed that the drive was autodetected and installed properly. The BIOS recognizes it as an "unknown device," but is still autorunning it as slave. Windows detects it as a local disk and shows the correct model number, but doesn't detect details like the drive type or the storage capacity. The PC I am using is a Dell Dimension, and the compatibility list for my HD lists Dell computers as being compatible (well, at least the Inspirons but that's because it's a mobility and I figured other fairly new Dells would work too). It's very strange that my HD would be completely locked up, but I'm starting to think maybe that's the case.

UPDATE:

Still the same problems so if G-Omaha or anyone else has anything to offer I'd be thankful. I re-checked my invoice on PCTorque and my warranty indeed expired, and just a couple days ago too. The extended warranty would have been nice but upon researching that I found it needs to be purchased at least 180 days before the manufacturer's original warranty expires (D'oh!) Let this be a lesson to me about warranties on very nice electronic equipment.

I have contacted Sager via e-mail to fill them in on what's going on and to see how willing they will be to help me out somehow. But since my warranty has expired I expect little else than a word of encouragement.

-sigh- I suppose this IS the computer I bought intending to further my knowledge of computers, so a little lesson in hardware is beneficial. I just wish it was a little more voluntary.

Try right clicking "My Computer", then Select Manage, then Select Disk Management, and see if the HDD shows up. You might just need to assign it a drive letter - you can do this by right clicking on the drive and highlighting "Change Drive letter and Paths....". Don't know if that will work; however, it might be worth a shot. I'm assuming that you have WIN-XP and so did the laptop and the Laptops HDD was formatted as NTFS.

::update::

I thought I'd let anyone who is concerned know the ultimate results of my problem. I finally accepted the fact that my hard drive was dead and gone forever, so I sent it in to Sager asking them for a replacement. Even though my warranty expired 1 week before I finally contacted them (note: I now know that my hard drive was dead before my warranty expired) they replaced my hard drive for FREE, with no out-of-warranty service charge. I only had to pay to ship the dead paperweight/magnet to them. Other people may have had problems with Sager support, but they were very helpful and generous to me in this case. I wouldn't expect many companies to replace a $200 part if they didn't have to. The new hard drive is identical (but hopefully without such a quick expiration date) and so far is working nicely.

So my computer is up and running once again. At the end of this ordeal I'm content and a little bit wiser.

that's what I was thinking. I was hoping that her HD problem was just something silly like she didn't have it plugged in or something.

Or her cat spilling a glass of water on it.

i'm going to really raise this one from the dead, and depress you at the same time,
i posted early in the thread, then never checked it again until just now..(i was searching for something unrelated...)

your drive saying it needed to be formatted..i've seen that before, and a lot of times, you can get the data off the drive, but you need a 3rd party software to do it, like Ontrack Data Recovery...

anyways, the drive was going to eventually die anyways, glad to hear you got a new drive out of Sager

Way to resurrect my thread without me even noticing until now! Man I sound like a n00b in this thread. Goes to show how much I have learned about computers in the past couple of years.

BTW, I don't even remember what was on that dead hdd, but knowing me, probably a lot of game saves and music. No biggie. Plus data recovery off a bad hard drive is more than I would have been willing to pay.

The "new" drive is still working like a charm.
