...so, how is the Linux exploration going? Are you enjoying Enemy-Territory? What have you learned?

I am curious and I figure others here might be, too.

Hi!!!

Im having a blast here...ET is working great but im googling about some tweaks and cheats as well When I started I sucked at the game...couldnt kill anyone unless they were wounded and on the ground and that made me sick Im getting better now...

Linux in general?? I have a desktop now and im in the process of installing all the different flavors to see which one really tickles my pickle...Mandrake, Suse, Debian, Gentoo etc. are all goin in this machine and i'll use each one of them and try to get them as close to windows in terms of functionality...

I've been on the road a lot the last two weeks but im back home now and its back to the linux documentation for me

Somehow...it just sorta reminds you that you have the power to choose...when you see the two lines in the grub loading screen...one is for a $300.00 OS and one is for a $1.00 OS (just the cost of the CD's)...

You know where you have to click...

As with any FPS, you'll get better as you play it more. Knowing the maps is key. ET has a steep learning curve, as there are many little "pieces" to learn (which weapon works best for you, which class should you be, etc.).

As for:

...you forgot to add "and one of them doesn't crash on me all the time." A convert!

Tell me about the ET learning curve...its no curve - its a damn veritcal line!!!

Im still sucking at this game...better than before but not where id like to be...its VERY different from BF1942. The grenades are my worst fear...

Also - the speed of the game is phenomenal - its too quick and you have to be quicker than that if you wanna be any good...

...I like it, though, because it really limits the amount of "rail gun" esque kills so prevalent in other games. That is, I can compete with the college kids who play 5 hours a day.

I like being an Engineer most of all - more to do.

I dont play much at all, but I have started to play ET sometimes. Are there any useful tricks and cheat that I should know? I know it probably gets less fun to play if you cheat, but it could explain why I always get killed

There aren't any real _cheats_ that I know about (punkbuster takes care of most of that). There are certainly some tricks to things, but many of them are legitimate. In other words - where are the best places to lay mines? Where's the best place to snipe people? How can I get some experience faster in some areas, making it easier for me to do things? Stuff like that.

I find that playing on middle-sized maps is the best (the 30+ people is a bit too "realistic" for me [i.e., you get shot before you even open your eyes]). I also run around the maps by myself so I can get familiar with where things are...that helps a lot.

I am usually a sniper in BF1942...havent had any success in ET as a sniper.

Also - I notice that it doesnt matter where you shoot - head shots have no particular advantage over a torso shot... Am I wrong!?!?

Yes, you're wrong. Head shots DO matter, but the helmets matter. There are a number of files you can find at the primary site . Also, pages like this one are very helpful.

Thanks chiphart, that was the kind of answer i liked to hear. I have just started to get to learn the maps in more detail and the game keeps getting more fun to play every time I play it. I saw one curious thing last time I played though, a teammember of mine was shot and waiting for medic, suddenly he rise and started to play again, but there had been no medic to him, I guess that he must have been cheating in some way. Or maybe my eyes wasnt working.

I was going to just write something like "You goofed" but your comment struck a memory of a little bug or something I'd seen (was it in q2, even?). Anyway, I haven't seen that cheat or anything like it, so I'd pretend it didn't happen :-)

I enjoy playing the crap out of ET.

If you find yourself looking for a server to play on, /dev/null (yup thats the server name, I play as DrEvil) is a dam good server. In the past, they used not to reset XP after completeing all the maps thus making it possible to achieve General status, albeit through quite a bit of gameplay. Unfortunately, they have that feature turned off for now, but its 8 maps worth of fraggin' goodness.

As far as characters go, depending on the level, I like using the field ops where necessary to hand out ammo (yes you get XP for handing out med kits and ammo). Also, Spec Ops can knock down the enemy command outpost with the det packs which yield decent XP.

I find the soldiers a little more difficult to get XP with the rocket launcher until you max out your gun and battle sense.

And also a note on the sniper, I find it highly ineffecient to being a sniper until I've got my guns maxed out (4 stars). Once you've got the 4 stars, sniping is a lot easier and better.

fwiw,

Thanks for the info, farmboy

Do you mean
1. Its easier when you are good at what youre doing
2. The game have some logic builtin so that you get better shots when aiming the same, if you have more stars

From here:

Covert Operations Level 3: Breath Control
Your mastery of the Sniper's art results in a 50% reduction in both recoil jump and weapon sway with Scoped Weapons.

A must read...

aha, that was interesting, thanks for the link chiphart :-)
Wow that link really helped!! I've been running around a lot now on all the maps and making small notes...hope it pays off when I play this evening...

Dang!! Its like preparing for an exam

ET:Wolf

Henrik: Hope ya playing ET:Wolf on linux ....are you ? heheheh if so what distro did you built ?

As well, just read that P4 2.4 B (533 FSB ) run pretty stable at 166 Mhz FSB QuadPumped to reach a nice 3.0 Ghz. Yeah, thats non recommended overcloaking, but how hard for you to manipulate the FSB in order to do so ? Let me know.

No, havent installed linux, havent had the time yet

The only possible fsb settings are 100,133 and 200 (x4 = 400, 533 and 800). So you would probably have bigger chance to succeed if you had a 2,4/400 aiming for 3,2/533. Now it is 2,4/533 going for 3,6/800. And there is no way to do it by software, it involves some hardware tinkering. Either soldering pins on the pll chip or isolate pins on the cpu depending on your computer and cpu.

darn FSB

Thanks Henry. Darn, 800 FSB on 533 FSB hardware...ummmm forget it.

Actually, if you do it right, the pci, usb and all other clocks in the system stay the same so its only the cpu clock that is affected. This means that you dont stress any other piece of hardware than the cpu. Most chance to succeed is probably a 2.0/400 going to 2.66/533. And in my case a 3.06/533 going to 4.6/800 would be nice, eh?
