I just can't stand the fan noise on the S360P and am debating to jump ship... Would appreciate your feedback, tx.

I think it's the other way around. the XBRITE's on the sony are a lot nicer than the screen on the W3V

When I was choosing my next laptop, I also narrowed the choices down to two: the Sony S360 or the Asus W3V. I went with the W3V,

The pro's of the W3V were
-Bigger widescreen
-More stylish (yes over a sony!)
-Slightly more powerful than the sony
-Jam packed with features (bluetooth, integrated mic, surround sound support, DVD+/-RW, Memory card reader, Infrared port all standard)
-Modular bay (hotswappable)
-Much smoother touchpad
-S-Video out (this was a MAJOR part of my decision aganist the sony)

The pro's of the sony were
-Lighter and smaller
-Longer battery life (on the standard bat)
-XBRITE screen beats out the ASUS one
-can be had for cheaper if you went through sony clearance (~$1400)
-Plastic overings on all of the ports (great for travelling/keeping dust out)
-A true 16:10 screen aspect (1280x800, the ASUS uses a 1280x768 resolution)

my suggestion is the play with both and see which one fits your bill better

nah i dont' like sony screens. I admit they are bright and have better viewing angles but they aren't vibrant. the colors look dull

strange, to me, the W3V colors look "washed out" compared to the Sony's.

i guess to each his own...

(now i'm starting to get scared that i have a defective screen, lol)

I currently have the vaio S360, T250, 600m & i9300 (w/ TruLife sp?) and agree (and thought) the Sony's XBRITE is the benchmark.

My personal cons with the 360 are the fan noise, lousy touchpad buttons (thin and rounded), and feared future interface w/ Sony Customer Service.

I have not physically seen the w3v but have heard it is pretty sweet... But my fears are: the screen will be step down and that the weight is increased by over 33% compared to the 360. I had no idea that the w3v's battery performance was inferior to the std battery of the 360 (pls. confirm)

I'm just curious as to who the OEM for the w3v's touchpad (I prefer synaptics over alps) and dvdrw drive are, tx

the touchpad on the W3V is a Synaptics. It's a black and smooth, unlike the textured one on the sony. The buttons on it are a bit sticky and hard to press, (it has to do with the way the touchpad is designed, the buttons are on the same sheet of aluminum as the frame of it.. hard to describe) but I'm used to tapping the touchpad instead of using the buttons

Synaptics-yeah; sticky hard to press buttons - this can't be good

so... what's the battery life of the asus w3v with the modular battery? does it add much weight to the w3v?
I would get an Asus over a Vaio anyday...I dislike Vaio computers

for the colors on the screen, you can calibrate it and use differnt color profiles.....

The W3V can operate for about 4h on the standard 8-cell battery. Don't know exactly how much the modular battery adds to that, though.

I think the Asus is better (from what I've read).

I would choose W3V/Z63A over the S-series because

1. The Sony is more expensive
2. The Sony has more adware (AOL free trial, Norton Trial, bla bla bla)
3. The Sony has backlight leakage (I assume W3V has this too?)
4. Sony support sucks
5. The optical drive on the Sony isn't swappable
6. A lot of people have Sony. Pick ASUS to be different.
7. With the z63a, you can customize specs to your liking
8. The Sony doesn't provide you with recovery disks
9. ASUS W3V has 2 years global warranty
10. The ASUS has a couple of extras such as a wireless mouse included

However, I think the Sony is a tad lighter and has dedicated graphics.
