A few questions:

1. Why Arctic Silver 5? Will it make a difference in lowering the temperature? I have heard that it does not make a difference and can even be worse than the default feature.

2. Why Seagate 80 gig/100 gig and not 60 gig hitachi 7200 rpm? Is it because of more space and cooler/quieter HD?
In terms of playing games, would the fps be better on the 7200 rpm?

3. 1 year warranty is good enough?

4. Will there be any problems installing drivers if you don't order any operating system? I have heard that there may be some issues with drivers if you install your own XP. This does not make sense but that is what I have heard.

Can someone answer the questions asked above.
I'd like to know the same.

1. No, not really a necessity for a laptop computer. On a desktop, it'll make a difference.
2. I'm guessing people would want more storage over speed. Access time is the same (only a 1ms difference at times). Some wont even notice the speed increase unless they're working with large files.
3. In my opinion, 1 year is just fine when it comes with Asus. The other components that you stuff into there may have their own warranties too. HD, Memory, etc.
4. No problems with buying it with out an OS. It'll come with drivers on the provided CD when you're setting up your own Window's OS.

1. Arctic Silver 5 _does_ make quite a difference, and can help lower temperatures by more than a degree or two (look for Smilepak's posts on this topic). Out of all the thermal grease available, AS5 is pretty much the most effective one, so that's why most people use it.

2. You'll receive similar performance from both drives, and its probably 80gb because, well, Hitachi doesn't offer an 80gb 7200 drive, and I'm guessing he wanted as big a hard drive as he could get and as fast as he could get.

3. 1 year warranty for a 4-year college isn't the best plan, but that's just his choice.

4. Asus includes a disk that has all the drivers for the hardware installed, regardless of whether or not you order an operating system.

According to the resellers that I've seen comment on it, Arctic Silver 5 isn't that much of an improvement over the standard thermal grease they use.

frames per second are mainly determined by the video card. the hard drive speed may give you a slight boost, but it wouldn't be much, and it certainly wouldn't be noticeable. Personally, I got the 80 GB 5400 RPM hard drive for the extra space. As Redmumba pointed out, there isn't a 7200 RPM hard drive higher than 60 GB (although they're coming soon)

depends what you need it for. most defective components will show up in a year, but some won't. I believe Donald from Power Notebooks posted that several components can go bad after a year or two of use, so that's a reason to get an extended warrantee. However, if you're planning to pin mod the CPU or do other modifications that could void your warrantee, why pay more for something that isn't going to help you?

There has been some talk about needing service pack 2 slipstreamed onto your XP installation disc, but I read a few posts from folks who just installed XP normally and had no problems, so my guess is everything should work fine.

That "slipstreaming" takes a long time and is very confusing to many. If you've got a regular WinXP, it'd be easier to download the entire Service Pack 2 and install it before the drivers.

My thoughts exactly However, I wanted to bring it up just so he wouldn't get caught off guard if someone mentioned it.

Oh, ok. No problem.
Well here's a link if anyone has a whole lot of time on their hands to do it. http://www.helpwithwindows.com/Windo...p2-bootcd.html

Congrats Artec!

As to Vancomycin's 4 questions, I think the answers posted are great already. But personally, the reason I got the Seagate 100GB 5400 is that in performance, it's just slightly slower than the Hitachi 7200 60G HD, so for $30 more, I'd rather have the disk space.

Artic5 is supposed to be the best. I use it on all my desktops. Not too sure about laptops, but for desktops, if properly used, it can dramatically lower the cpu temps. I experienced a 15 degree drop. Besides, it's only $5, it's not like you're gonna go bankrupt for that small investment. I think it's a good investment just in case it does help lower the cpu temperature.

Why 1 year instead of 4? In one year, the laptop technology would probably improve greatly & I'll probably be tempted the Laptop Goddess to buy another one... I hope I can be strong & withstand her seduction...but that didn't seem to be the case for the last few years. Also, you can always extend the warranty later if you feel like it.

As for XP...I like to install a fresh copy myself so I can decide what I want on my computer. It's a pain to remove all the useless stuff that always come pre-installed in a new laptop.

Well I got the 80gb because:

1. It runs cooler
2. More space
3. Quiet
4. I dont think I will notice a big difference in speed sinc ethe 80gb is bigger there isnt that much of a difference IMO.
