Beeping...no display...oh my. - Page 2

If you are getting to the POST screen, the memory controller is probably OK. If it was faulty, it would likely fail before POST with the long beep code. Most likely it is hanging at the POST screen simply due to the CMOS settings. If you can get in to CMOS, try "load fail safe defaults" and "load optimized defaults" to see what the result is. Also make sure the memory timings are set for SPD (or auto), and the CPU information is correct. It may not hurt to enable "reset escd info" also.

Since I already put the PC2100 stick back into the other PC, so I tried putting the Utra in slot 2, but got the no display and beeping, even after I tried reseting the CMOS. Then I took the battery out for about 20 minutes, put it back in, and now it booted fine showing the CPU as a Athlon 1300, primary and slave drives...

Here is most of the stuff it displayed:

-----------------------------------------------

Main Processor : AMD Athlon XP(tm) 1300MHz
Memory Testing : 524288K OK

CMOS Checksum error - Defaults Loaded
Warning! CPU has been changed.
Please re-enter CPU settings in the CMOS setup and remember to save before quit!

Press F8 to enable system configuration
Press F9 to select Booting Device after POST
Press F1 to continue, DEL to enter SETUP

-----------------------------------------------

I pressed delete to enter the setup, but nothing happened. I hit F8, F9, and F1 and nothing happened. I made sure the keyboard was plugged in, it was, so I unplugged it and plugged it back in, same thing. Now I pressed the restart button, it restarts....same beeping and no display.

At this point I think you should just assume that your mobo's fried. Get a new one.

Getting a new MB would be easier than that approach for sure

I installed a new motherboard--M7NCD Ultra. Works greats. But he is still having the problem where he will be playing a game for maybe 20 minutes, maybe an hour, and the game will exit back to Windows with an error message (the one where ms asks you if you want to report it.) Could this be due running 2 different types/brands of memory, even though they should both be running at PC2700 speeds?

Possible, but highly unlikely. The memory is likely fully loaded in way under 20 minutes while gaming. Any memory problem should show up almost immediately. To be sure, run memtest+ from memtest.org. It is very thorough. Capture the critical error log and post it. It should give information on the source of the problem. I don't remember off hand where it is stored, but it tells you when it comes up where it stores it.

OK, this can't be that difficult....

I downloaded and extracted "Download - Memtest86 v3.2 ISO image (zip)"

Burnt it as a bootable CD. When I try to boot from it:
Quote:
Boot from CD :
1. FD 2.88MB System Type-(OF)
BOOT DISK FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
Then I tried buring another disk (non-bootable, just burnt)...

Got the same result when I tried to boot from it.

Then I tried it like this (the .iso itself and as a boot image)...

Same boot failure message.

Now that you said any memory problem should show up almost immediately, I'm much less concerned memory is the problem. Also, this problem seems less of a problem now; he has played several games about 6-7 hours (not constantly) and only one game exited (Rise of Nations, while joining a online game--when it was connecting to a server.) He was also able to play several single-player matches in Battlefield 2 without a problem, which eats up all the RAM it can get.

Don't burn the file as a bootable disc. The image has to be extracted. I am not familiar with that particular software, but with Nero, you use an option "burn image".

I downloaded the Nero trial and got it to boot fine. It looks as if it is going through the tests a second time now. How long should I let it run?
If it made it through once, everything is probably OK with the RAM. Depending on the time it has run for, you may want to let it run a little longer to rule out memory heat as the culprit. Something else you may want to try is running the 3dmark demo in a loop for a while and see if the same thing happens.

Memtest ran until I stopped it. I stopped it after 2 hours 45 minutes.

In the second video test of 3DMark05, it stopped and came up with this error message:
