Unofficial Ferrari 4000 Upgrades/Accessories List

Figured, if Acer wasn't going to put up an accessories/upgrades list ... then we might as well.

Post any accessories or upgrades you've done here
Mark any upgrade/accessory not comming from Acer as non-supported and try at own risk
Also; try and include a link to the upgrade/accessory that you installed

Upgradeable Items:
  • Ram
  • Hard disk
  • Mini-PCI card
  • DVD-RAM drive
  • Battery
  • Am I missing anything ?

Mini-PCI wireless card ....

Trade a BG Broadcom card for an ABG Intel

Disclaimer: The fact that I've tried this ... doesn't mean it'll work for you... as usual ... try at own risk ...

I found that the mini-pci wireless card ... was a pain in the ass under Linux for Kismet and AirSnarf support ... so I went hunting ... and found
http://www.intel.com/network/connect...ess_mobile.htm

and went ... hmmmm ... for $43 Canadian ... what the hell ... and tried it.
It works pretty dam well ... dispite what the Intel Install Instruction papers say (Intel tries to say that the device will only work in Centrino machines ... )

Note: The wireless card antena attachments can be tricky to get off and on ... be carefull ... and have patient

admittedly I'm spoiled by my "old" T42P that I've replaced with this Ferrari...but does anyone know of a modular hdd bay?

I'd love to get 2 hdds in this system, as I almost never need an optical drive.

Nice idea.... I rarely use the optical either ... I haven't seen one for Acers laptops ... but I've seen them a plenty for Toshibas ...

Probably .... yeah ! So if you're really worried about voiding your warranty ... just wait for Acer to eventually get around to providing upgrades ... some time probably late next year .. :-)

I got a Shoreline 15.4" for £25. Fits well, and as the fans on the 4005 vent to the side, you can use the unit inside the sleeve. Has elastic strips on the corners to hold onto the notebook.

Odds are that it doesn't -VOID- the warranty. They just won't service those parts if they go bad.

I swapped out the 1gb of 2700 and put in 2gb of 3200 (I run VMWare all the time, and I want the extra RAM for those machines). I doubt my warranty is void (although I do certainly have to call them tonight and activate the 3 year extension I bought for )....but I wouldn't expect them to service me if I have RAM problems.

I'll be swapping out the 100gb for a 20gb 4200rpm with bad sectors later on this week. (I want an X32 install so I can run the GPS(no x64 drivers) on the way to and from Quakecon in Dallas on the 10th-14th). That shouldn't void the warranty either, but I certainly can't call them up and complain if I break something.

Most of the things we've spoken about so far are user-upgradable. They can be upgraded without voiding any warranty, but the new parts aren't covered by the warranty. This is standard with every company I can think of.

Does running PC3200 work perfectly and runs at 400MHz???? Because I am thinking about upgrading to 2x 1GB DDR400 CL=2.5 of either KINGMAX or OCZ and I just want to make sure I'm not wasting my money on DDR400 if it only opperates at DDR333 frequency.

Thanks

What brand and model # did you use for this? Did you have to set the memspeed with software like A64 tweaker or what did you have to do to get it to run at 200MHz? Thanks.
popped it in and it worked fine. The chipset and the CPU support PC3200, so nothing needed to be done.

I think they jumped up $10 in price though...

That's weird. I got corsair pc3200 2x1GB and it runs at 166MHz.
