Buy WinXP64 now or wait for Windows Vista64

I am really interested in getting WinXP64 since I've tried the MSDN version. I still wanted to use my Home edition COA so I canceled my order for the free XP64 trade-in offer (it went through and everything). I don't really want to spend $150 for WinXP64 retail when Windows Vista64 (formerly Longhorn) is right around the corner in 06 and I already have XP Pro now. What to do....

I doubt we're going to see vista any time soon

Vista will be out next year, it is predicted to come out the summer of 2006 (on year away). Currently there is not an advantage to updgrading to Windows XP Pro x64 as the 32-bit version of XP Pro is outperforming the 64-bit version. Windows Vista will also be released in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Windows Vista will also take full advantage of the 64-bit platform, HT technology, Centrino Technology, Dual-Core Technology, and AMD's Hyper-Transport technology. Vista should be the OS of all OS's. It will utilize EM64T Pentium 4 HT processors better than current Windows XP or Pro x64. A 3GHz Pentium 4 HT will run alot faster when Vista is released as the current versions of Windows XP don't take full advantage of HT technology. The same can be said about AMD processors in that they will perform better with Vista.

I say wait for Windows Vista as it will take advantage of current technology. The Beta has not been released and all the information I pulled comes from what Microsoft says. Additionally, would you want to spend $145 on Windows XP Pro x64 now then spend $200 for Windows Vista in another year? Wait.

Vista may not be Vista ! [H]ardocp has a posting , ol M.S. doesn't own vista, some other comp. had it registered for a while ;} Anyway why wait? When did we get win 95 ? In 1995 ? How about 98, 2k etc. It will only be released when they are sure it is bug full! oops bug free ;} maybe.

I'd assume Vista is nothing more than a codename. Microsoft's product codenames have always been far more interesting than final product names. Proof! There's a whole story behind the usage of city names for the releases of Windows from 95 (codenamed Chicago) to the canceled Cairo project.

Actually, Longhorn was the codename, Vista is what they're releasing it as... or at least, that's what their plan seems to be so far. Anyways, if you can get a free upgrade to Windows XP 64-bit, why wait? Its free, right? So who really cares?

Well Microsoft Vista is destined to come out 2006, with the beta version releasing August 3, 2005.

I dont think anyone that got the free upgrade to x64 has truly ditched their 32-bit XP and totally switched to x64 so I'd rather keep my XP Home COA just in case. $150 for x64 doesnt sound as a wise investment right now due to its minimal advantage it has over 32-bit XP, as of right now. Who ever has the ability to get MSDN copies of Vista in August will be very lucky to review it first since there is soo much hype to it.

Is there a chance they just sort of canceled "Longhorn" since they had to pull so many goodies out of it, and re-codenamed the leftovers as "Vista"? Just thinking out loud here. That's sort of how Cairo became Win2k.

Do you have any problems with the XP home that came with your computer? If so, go for the xp64, I'm a beta tester for microsoft, and I'd say that xp64, is very good. The benchmarks are withen a percent or two of xp32. That may change as the drivers for xp64 mature. I have no problems with xp64 sp2(beta) other then no modem, big deal! My machine runs great. Guild Wars plays great, HL2 played just as good on 64 as it did on 32. So really it is up to you. The new "VISTA" will feature a new 3d graphic interface, I'm sure that will go through alot of changes before the final is realesed. Microsoft has been known to not support old "Legacy" hardware with their new OS realese, so it would not supprise me if there is no support for out older AGP 9600 Mobility, it does not support Pixel Shader 3.0, so if that is a requirement for the OS to function we will be out of luck anyway.

I guess what I'm saying is this, if it is not broke, don't fix it. If you want to play with the 64 bit OS give xp64 a try you might like it. I think it works great, I also think XP32 Home is just fine for almost everyone. It is fast, stable, powerful, and did I mention STABLE.

Keep us posted on what you do.

In terms of the actual UI for Vista, it has the ability to go back to standard Classic mode, which doesn't have any of the fancy stuff.

You won't need the latest and greatest video card to run Vista.

And I don't believe Pixel Shader 3.0 is a requirement for Vista - just DX9 support for full UI features.

I work in a IT departent we jus had a decussion about vista we should be getting it very soon..i will test it and let you guys know how it runs

I think you should stop fretting over 64-bit. A lot of things are still broken and I rather just wait instead of running into problems. What will you gain? I little more performance? No performance? OMG!

According to who? The vast majority of my programs are faster under x64 than under XP SP2. And from what I've read and seen, there isn't any real difference in performance overall between XP and x64.

Pulling all of your info from Microsoft isn't exactly what I'd call reliable. Furthermore, who said you had to pay $145 for x64? The TAP program only charges S&H.
