Here on how to do it:
Once you've tried to install the drivers in the normal way and it'd bleated on about the hardware you will find that a folder called ATI has been created.
Now you need to do a manual driver upgrade of the video card so follow these instructions.
1) Go to device manager, right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware - device manager.
2) Click on the plus next to displayadaptors and double click on the adaptor shown.
3) Select the driver tab and then update driver.
4) If you've SP2 then click on not at this time, otherwise click on install from a specific location, then don't search, then next.
On the next screen select have disc.
5) Now you need to browse to the ATI and keep on browsing until you get to the driver and then the 2kxp_inf folders. Now choose the c2_2177 inf
6) Choose the correct adaptor description and load the files.
7) After rebooting navigate down the ATI folder until you get to open the CPanel folder, click on setup and it will install the control panel. Lastly, once you're sure things have been installed correctly, delete the ATI folder as it is no longer required.
Good luck.....

Hey Chris, do you mind if I ask what 3dmark05 scores you get with this setup? I wonder if they're identical to what I'm getting with the mobility modder (I've never had problems with it so far, but it seems like your way might be better. Not in scoring, they should be the same in that, but possibly in stability and options?).

Guys, I still don't get something...

Why do you need the modder at all for the omega drivers? I could install them without downloading the modder... I wanted to follow the instructions for the manual update but for some reason the installation didn't stop for me... as it was supposed to do according to the instructions.

Am I missing something?

Also, what happens if I just install the omega drivers without the modder?

I'm really confused here...

Thanks for the help.

Did you make sure you uninstalled the previous video card drivers before installing the new ones? As far as I know, the mobility modder takes the desktop card drivers and allows them to work on a notebook graphics card.

Nope. I didn't uninstall the old drivers.

Could this be the reason why I could install the omega drivers without using the modder?

Yes, from what I've been told, you definitely need to uninstall the old drivers before installing the new ones.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Hi Ransomed1, I've not performed any benchmarks on my system as I'm not really into this numbers game. I could though if you think it's useful to you but I wouldn't be doing it within the next few days....

Oh, it's not really that important, it's more that I wonder if it makes any difference in how the card performs.

If you don't get a chance to check it, don't worry.

Hi again, hell I'm on holiday for the next six weeks I'm sure I'll get around to it. BTW, is there a demo of the benchmark I can use?

Yeah, go to Futuremark.com and get the demos for both 3dmark05 and 3dmark03. They work fine, you just don't get sound with the vids unless you have the full version.

Do you know if rivatuner will work?

I don't know. Anybody else?

Hi, well I've just ran 3dmark03 on the default settings and I got a score of 3433 which is what I'd expect for my X600 64mb, 512mb of ram system. If I get around to it I'll run it on my desktop too if it runs with XP X64....

I got the Ferrari 4005.

I had first tried to use Omega's drivers and was not able to get them to even install correctly.
Windows kept giving me a message that I should try installing a standard VGA driver first.

I was able to get the factory drivers re-installed, but I no-longer had the control panel tabs to control the GPU's functions. I.E. AA, PowerPlay, etc.

I then downloaded the official ATI 5.7 Catalyst w/ CCC and the Mobility Modder. And the install went great without a single hitch.
But now that I've tried a few games and Bench's, I'm finding the down side.

I first tried BattleField 1942. The game was running great, but the 1152x864 resolution wasn't being stretched to the horizontal borders like it was before. And when I went to exit BF 1942, my desktop was completely screwed. I mean bad. Nothing a restart didn't fix, but messed up.

I loaded up the BF 2 demo and it to played well with the same resolution issue. I basically had two black strips on the sides of the game screen. But BF 2 exited back to the desktop fine.

I loaded up the Flatout demo and it displayed correctly, but it also has built in support for wide aspect resolutions. It also exited to the desktop fine.

I then ran the 3DMark05 bench, and got 25xx. Almost 200 more than with the stock drivers, but with the same resolution issue that both BF games displayed.

3DMark03 actually showed a performance loss of about 80 marks.

I also was seeing the white line at the bottom of the screen when running any 3D accelerated app.

What a pain.

I'm thinking once my copy of X64 shows up, I'll stay with the stock drivers.
They may be a nudge slower, but at-least they work right.
I'm also see a major decrease in battery life with these drivers, even with PowerPlay set to "Optimal Batter Life" when running on battery.
I'm getting close to 2 hrs, when with the stock drivers, I was seeing 2 1/2 to 3 hrs.

Also, it is wierd, when I submitted the results of the 3DMark scores to the ORB, the details page was stating that the graphics card had 256MB RAM.
Hmmm... wouldn't it be nice if a driver update could double your RAM.
I'm sure this is a error on FutureMark's part, since the Catalyst Control Center shows 128MB.

Maybe the driver update enabled hypermemory?

Sorry you've had so many problems with it. Did you remember to uninstall all previous ATI drivers before installing the Catalyst ones? This might be what caused your problem. I would try again. This time, uninstall anything that says ATI in your Add/Remove Programs, then reboot, then reinstall the drivers and Mobility Modder again. Trust me, I did this and I never get the problems you've mentioned... I run 3dmark in widescreen just fine. I didn't get worse scores in 3dmark03, but they only went up like 10 3dmarks. It's worth it anyway, for the gain of 300 in 3dmark05.

Good luck, let me know if you try this, if it works or not.

Hi again, I've just ran 3dmark03 on my desktop and I got a score of 11974. I know that this might be off topic but it might give an indicator of how poor some laptops are....

What are your desktop specs?

...and how does it do on battery power?

I game on the road, so a desktop wouldn't work for me. But I AM curious on what setup you have in your desktop.
