x700 Driver Update - Page 4

Well, I figured out what the side black strips are from.

There is an option in the ATI CCC that controls whether the image is scaled to the screen proportionally or stretched. I had it set to maintain the aspect ratio.
Oops.

I can only hope things work as well in X64 when my copy shows up in the mail.

Oh, just so all info is available, I did do a complete un-install of everything related to ATI that I could find in the Add Remove Programs applet.
Thanks for pointing that out though, an easy step to forget.

Would you mind elaborating on this a little bit?

Is it an ATI or an AMD thing? I'm guessing ATI since this is a display driver update thread.
And do I have control over it?

Hi, by desktop I mean a full-blown PC not a laptop, specs are in an earlier post, sorry if there's been any confusion....

LOL. No confusion, I just didn't see your specs there. I must have only read your post in the e-mail that NBF sent me. I see now. Nice. But a notebook can come close to that, if it has the 6800 Ultra, or x800 card in it. But not a notebook as light as ours.

Hi, maybe they can perhaps there are some out there but then I'd guess you'd be paying upward of £2000 for similar performance. I actually nearly went for a Acer that had a AMD64 CPU in it but the graphics card wasn't as good as my present one. My guess is that with the way laptop prices are falling, in a couple of years real gaming performance will be affordable. However, one thing is for sure, to make laptops more attractive, they need to make updating the components such as the graphics cards available, it can be done as other manufacturers have shown...

Chris, I agree that it would be nice if graphics cards in notebooks would be truly upgradeable (like in desktops), but for now power is the real problem. Eventually they'll get around that little issue.

As for "real" gaming performance, I did spend close to $2k on my notebook, but it games better than MOST of my friends' computers (and the guys who have better gaming machines spent $400+ on just the graphics cards). I honestly wouldn't call 80fps with all settings maxed out at 1680 x 1050 resolution a non-gaming machine. It's a 6.4lb wonder.

I'm having some problems with omega drivers on my 8104. I would really appreciate if any of you guys could answer my questions. I've tried to write down everything step by step.

1. Uninstalled ATI stock drivers
2. Installs ATI tools that come with the Omega drivers
3. Tries to install omega drivers -- but it fails (no ATI folder was created)
4. Runs driver modder (downloaded from Driverheaven)
5. Selects "Radeon Omega Driver" folder
6. Modder gives error message: "This set is already modified".
7. Runs driver modder again
8. Selects "Radeon Omega Drivers\v2.6.53\2KXP_INF" directory where all the
inf files are
9. Error message: "This directory does not contain the correct files, please
check the directory and try again."
10. Gives up with the driver modder
11. Goes to device manager, selects video card
12. updates driver manually
13. Selects inf file from "Radeon Omega Drivers\v2.6.53\2KXP_INF" folder (file is called CX2K_RAD_OMEGA.inf). QUESTION: There are 3 inf files in 2KXP_INF directory (one in the main directory, another one in FW-Off folder and a third one in FW-ON folder). Which one I should use???
14. When I "open" the inf file with Windows device manager there is a list of ATI video cards where I'm supposed to choose the one I have
15. There are 3 "Radeon X700 Series Omega 2.6.53" just after each other. Then they are followd by 3 "Radeon X700 Series Secondary Omega 2.6.53". QUESTION: Which one should I choose for my 8104??? There were other X700 cards on the list as well... maybe I should choose one of those instead???
16. Finally chooses the last"Radeon X700 Series Omega 2.6.53" and manually installs drivers (in spite of several Windows warnings to do otherwise)
17. everything goes white... notebook freezes, not even ctr-alt-del helps -- only holding down the turn on buttom
18. turns on notebook -- windows starts without any problems, everything seems to be fine, omega drivers seems to be installed

What's going on now? Shall I re-install the omega drivers? Did I choose the right inf file? Did I choose the right video card from the list? So many questions...

Thanks for the help!!!

The first time I did this install and mod, I was able to get it to work just fine. But then I reformatted and tried again, and I think I must have done something slightly different (or they changed the driver I was trying to use), and now I'm having the same problem you are (that message that says, "This set is already modified"). And it doesn't work.

My suggestion for you is run 3DMark05. If you get a score of around 2500, then you're using the correct drivers. If you get a score more like 2200, then you're using the stock drivers (or equivalent).

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Can anyone confirm if the Catalyst 5.7 drivers are enabling hypermemory on the X700? According to anandtech it will! Is there a way to test this?
Yes, I am running them on the Ferrari 4005, and they are the best drivers I've found. More stable than the Catalysts and the Mobiity Modder (in my experience).

Shadow, what exactly are you running? Are you getting the Catalyst drivers to run without the Mobility Modder? What do you mean? You seem quite vague imo.

Thanks,

Do you see that annoying white line on the bottom of the screen in non native resolutions?
I first used the Catalyst drivers off the ATI site and the Mobility moder from Pajie. That worked ok, but I had some stability problems. Then I uninstalled the ATI Tray tools and Control panel, and used the Omega drivers. It comes with its own installer and doesn't need the other drivers uninstalled first. The installer also doesn't need a mobility modder as that is already part of the package. The drivers installed fine, and its control panel gives a good number of options. Though I have issues with crashing right now, the Omega drivers have given me the best results.

The crashing seems to be a hardware related issue, and I am getting a replacement notebook sometime this week hopefully. Stock drivers and all others that I have been able to find produce the same thing, so it's not driver-specific.

As far as the white line goes, I have never seen it on my screen, and I've jumped around resolutions quite a bit. Omega comes with Multi-Res which allows very fast and easy resolution changing, and it's a nice little app to have.

Relatet to this link the new catalyst 5.8 ist coming soon. Maybe that will also fix some BF2 problems

i'm using a ferrari 4002 wlmi. it has a 1.6ghz cpu. other than that, everything is identical to the 4005wlmi. i ran 3dmark 05 with catalyst 5.7 installed with the help from mobility modder. i only got 2052. is this rational judging from the fact that my machine has a cpu witch only differs 0.4ghz from the 4005wlmi? btw, i installed omega drivers as well and i oc'd my gpu. here's the results from 3dmarks 05:

no oc(358/331):2052
with oc(gpu 400/mem 350):2253

and do i have to uninstall everything (omega and the drivers) in order to be able to install catalyst 5.8?
