iBooks and Mini Updated Today

Well the iBooks and the Mac Mini have been updated today. Not much new, really, nothing all that exiting. A worthy upgrade for those that were holding out for a new purchase though.

There is just a speedbump on the iBooks to 1.33 and 1.42, 512 ram and airport and bluetooth are now standard. As for the mini, as far as I can tel, the only thing new is that airport and bluetooth are now standard.

Still no widescreen on the iBook though.

I'm incredibly underwhelmed.

I was going to wait for the new ibook to come out, but i got the Asus Z70v refresh insted and im glad i did, nothing special with the new ibook

Yeah i agree, a pretty anaemic update.

The iBooks are now Core Image compatible! I'm trying to smile but its hard when all the speculation about widescreen was flying around...

I've placed my order for the new 12" iBook, only because i needed one, if I didn't I would most probably wait until the REAL update appears, which will be Q2 2006 (intel).

Keep your chins up lads!

I have no doubt that there will be a widescreen iBook, but it's probably not going to come out until the Intel switch.

That's what I was thinking. While this current update does nothing for me, it is a good enough update for those that needed a new iBook. Same price as previous iBook, but with 512 standard, bluetooth and airport standard, and the scrollpad and sensors. So you are saving a couple hundred in upgrades, always a good thing. It's just not a very exciting update.

Well, widescreen letdown aside, the upgrades are nice overall. I actually don't see a reason to buy the 12" Powerbook right now, given the $500 premium (or $400 if you're looking at the Superdrive models, but then, that iBook is 14" anyway).

$999 iBook - 1.33 GHz G4, 512 MB DDR333 SDRAM, 40 GB hard drive, 32 MB Mobility Radeon 9550

$1499 Powerbook - 1.5 GHz G4, 512 MB DDR333 SDRAM, 60 GB hard drive, 64 MB GeForce FX Go 5200

So 50% more for 167 MHz, 20 GB, and 32 MB of RAM on a graphics card that's still pathetic (anyone have comparisons of the Go 5200 and the Mobility 9550?).

So unless you're obsessed with aluminum, you might as well grab the 12" iBook--unless I'm missing something?

Well, upgrades are upgrades and you get more for less so it is all good. Though, a widescreen would be nice for all notebooks, including the 12" PB, hopefully we'll see it in the future. Until then, I'm still happy with my 15" PB purchase.

Except a multi-axis scrolling trackpad and sudden motion sensor. What exactly were people expecting from a consumer notebook like this? A 2.7ghz G5 and a 17" widescreen display?

a widescreen display...

a small fact...the memory is now @ 333Mhz DDR, on par w/ the mini and PBs.

not a huge update, but i am surprised at the addition of BT 2.0 standard and the shockproof HDs. i thought for sure they'd leave a few hard lines drawn between the 12" iBooks and the 12" PBs.

Maybe there are some PB updates on the way
post #14 of 35
I'm not too sure, the way Apple has gone about these updates, the CPU/gfx options arent up to par with the entry level PB, so there is still breathing room between the iBook & PB
post #15 of 35
Actually, I think that is a very good and much-needed update. Now, at least it's more competitive with other brands (I mean, many others still don't have 512 MB standard!)
Frankly, they should have had 512 standard from the get-go, considering their operating system's requirements. An upgraded GPU would have been nice, though the current one may be able to handle Tiger. I really don't know.
Does anyone know if the 512 is built into the machine or is it still 256 built in with an additional 256 in the open slot like on the 12 inch PBs?
it's built in, as the new max RAM spec is for 1.5GB, unless of course u can dig up a 1.25GB RAM module.

oh yeah, and wtf is the deal w/ the minis not getting a GPU upgrade along w/ the iBs? u'd think they'd want their whole line of products up to snuff w/ Tiger's core video requirements asap. w/ the mini being based off of the iB logic boards, it seems like their doing extra work to have 2 different GPUs on them.

But like kwick7 said, you're saving quite a bit of money in upgrades. I'm liking this refresh. But I haven't been interested in iBooks for as long as you guys, so you guys were probably hoping for a more revolutionary change.
Tria...where did you hear the mobo in the mini is based on those of the iBook? I can't imagine that being true considering all the extra space the iBooks have compared to the mini.
