iBooks and Mini Updated Today - Page 2

The refresh is quite good. For $1250CAD you can get a pretty solid notebook in the 12" iBook. Quite a bit better (for the most part) than what's out there for around that price at your leading Futureshop/BestBuy.

The mini I'm not so impressed with. Thought there would be a upgrade to the video at least which is pretty anemic to say the least.

from many of the reviews of the Mini. i didn't mean that it's the same mobo, just that all of the tech (ports, GPU, controllers, etc) were based off of the G4 notebook systems. i.e.-from macworld: "Although the Mac mini is a desktop machine, many of its components—hard drives, optical drives, processor, and graphics card—are the same as those in the iBook G4."

That's a completely different thing from the mobos being based off the iBook mobos.

Considering how small everything is in the mini they probably can't add better video without having to add another fan or a larger heatsink. They'll have to wait until better video chips can be made to fit the space and use mostly passive cooling.

Well i've ordered my iBook... it says it's shipped... but delivery time; 7 days? where are they shipping from, the moon?

but i guess the upgrades in speed couldnt go very far.... since currently the powerbooks lowest speed is 1.5GHz... they can't let the ibook be similar... so e nxt fastest after 1.33GHz and less than 1.5GHz would be 1.42GHz.... i guess apple's speedbumps are predictable by now in terms of numbers... if there is gonna be another revision for the pbooks... the nxt one will most probably be 1.8GHz... with 1.67GHz as the lower end... and for the next ibook rev it would be 1.5GHz...

1GHz... 1.25GHz... 1.33GHz... 1.5GHz... 1.42GHz... 1.67GHz... 1.8GHz... 2.0GHz...

pretty predictable numbers...

If you BTO (built to order), then it ships from china and it may take a bit longer. It took my order (BTO) 7 days (including weekends) from order to at my doorstep.

No, I've ordered a stock 12".. but from what people are saying about apple stores not having of the new iBooks, it might get shipped from over there anyway

When will they upgrade the PowerBooks?
Most likely around October, assuming they don't hold off and wait until the Intel switch.
They can't upgrade until Freescale releases the PPC7448.
They could upgrade to the low power G5s by IBM right now if they wanted to, but it's doubtful it's going to happen.
IBM announced the low power G5s, they didn't say anything about them shipping.
it would still take time even if they wanted to upgrade to the low power G5s...

Ok, so my iBook finally arrived. I'm typing this while having a cigarette in the garden. No dead pixels! That's the main thing, my only little gripe is that when the book is closed, there is quite a lot of 'give' between the screen lid and the base... I guess what im trying to say is when closed it just doesn't feel tight enough. Anyways, it's all good so far with me and my first Mac
