what do you think of microsoft's new genuine advantage program? - Page 2

IE>Tools>manage Add-ons>Windows Genuine Advantage>Disable

BTW Ransomed, when Jeff tried that with WGA off, it didn't work. I think you can only do security updates with it off, and the thing Jeff was trying to download was more of an advanced plugin for windows that integrated WPA2 into windows XP.

Ok Just_Blaze, I didn't know about that. Very cool. I wonder why that is? It seems like you ought to either be in, or out when it comes to updates. Micro$oft and their screwy ways. Sheesh.

The point I was trying to illustrate, was that I highly doubt MS is going to hand out free copies of WinXP without getting good info on who and where you obtained your illegal copy. If you don't care to provide that info I imagine they will be more then happy to sell you a copy at retail or send the C&D to you.

Jeff told me there is a .dll file you download and overwrite in the system32 directory. Then you get all the updates without being prompted by genuine advantage.

The site tried replacing it immediately when it found out it was a cracked file. So that's not working...

Disabling the add-on has worked for me. Don't have the time to always validate my copy...

Well, the .dll file that Jeff has works just fine still. Today in fact and genuine advantage is enabled in IE.

Yup, that's Microsoft for you. Always putting out a new fix that makes things worse. Yet, we all use it....

On my friends Jeffs Windows Xp OEM computer that failed the validation, windows update still works. What am I missing here?

They will still give you the critical updates because they don't want a bunch of people pissed off at them because they don't have the ability to patch their pirated system. But they won't let you have other non-critical updates from them.
