What's up guys?
I've got a Compaq nx9010 that is running slow as crap. It takes forever to load programs, and i constantly get freeze frames on the screen when trying to transfer a large amout of data. (where the outline of the icons is still present on the screen after the transfer and you have to use an open window to "erase" the screen.) It takes an unreasonable amount of time to load any program (Office, Photoshop, even right click on something and go to properties takes a while).
It's a P4 2.8ghz with 512 mb ram. I can't figure out why it's so slow. I've tried to make it as bare bones as possible(and still function well) with less than 20 processes running and a commit charge of ~100mb after start up which also takes a full minute. Even after running MS Bootvis. I've turned off the Effects for display properties, I've got it set for performance under Performance options. I've turned of System Restore, and it's got no Spyware or Virus's because it was just as slow as it is today as it was when I fomatted and reinstalled XP. I've turned of unnecessary services and nothing loads at startup.
The only thing that I can think of at this point is that the HDD is the bottleneck.
It's got shared video memory so I set that down to 16mb in the bios to free up some extra RAM.
I've run benchmark tests and it seems to benchmark fairly well, faster than my Dell 2.2 Ghz 512 RAM. However, my Dell is considerably faster loading programs and has a faster overall feel when navigating menus, explorer, ect.
Also if anyone knows any programs for benchmarking how fast programs load let me know. I've got hardware benchmarks, but I want to see how long it takes to load various programs.
Thanks for your help.
