Hi,

If you don't feel like reading a long post, here's the basic question (You can just read this line and not have to read my long story):

Does anyone else get Error 51's in event viewer or have other problems with an external firewire harddrive on their Sager 4750's?

Now, the story, for those who care, is below:

I have a Sager 4750 (Windows XP Pro SP2) with a Starking TT-745 series external harddrive enclosure, containing a 250gig Maxtor drive from that I purchased from Bason Computer

Within a week or purchasing this drive, Windows Event Viewer began logging Error 51 - An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation. errors. I cannot take the drive out of the enclosure without voiding my warranty, and can do almost no diagnostics through the firewire port, so I have no idea if these errors were being caused by a bad enclosure, a bad drive, or if the Sager 4750 firewire port just kindof sucks.

So, I RMA'd the drive. They replaced the drive inside the enclosure (I still have the same enclosure, different drive inside). I also bought a new firewire cable that sits more firmly in the port. The drive has been fine for several weeks, no errors in the event viewer or anything, until today:

I had to temporarily store 100 gigs on this drive, coming from over the network. The drive had a fairly constant stream of writing 7,000K/s for a few hours, rested for a few hours, then had a fairly constant stream of reading 7,000K/s ... for about 2 hours. Then everything stops and says
"Windows - Delayed Write Failed. Windows was unable to save all the data for the file F:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection Please try to save this file elsewhere."

I checked the event viewer. Hundreds of Error 51s, with Error 9's every once in a while (sbp2port, The device, , did not respond within the timeout period.)

I could do nothing with the drive, it was completely frozen. So, I switched off and on the drive, and without complaint it starts back up, and has resumed the transfer with no errors in event viewer for the past 20 minutes.

My question is, does anyone else have these problems with their Sager 4750 firewire? Is it my enclosure that is bad? Maybe the drive inside? Or is the external harddrive fine and it's just my computer that is messed up?

I would appreciate any response.

edit: I thought I'd add that the enclosure contains a fan, so I don't think overheating is a problem. The enclosure is lukewarm at most to the touch.

edit2: Just checked event viewer, and I did just recieve a single Event 51... but it didn't stop the drive or cause any problems. With my last drive, I noticed that the frequency of the errors increased over time, making me believe it may actually be the drive inside.
