8790 running very hot

My 8790 is extremely hot and the fan runs constantly. One day while processing some jpegs, it shut down completelly.

Would an external PC cooling fan help (the kind that fit under the unit?)

if so, can you suggest a specific fan to buy?

First of all, check if the fans aren't dirty. They might be working but not properly.

Have you cleaned out the system's exhaust/cooling system? Also, don't forget to lift up the keyboard and dustoff the plate that is under there as this is part of the cooling "grid".

I found that elavating the rear of the machine by about 1 inch and the fron by about 1/2 inch greatly improved the effeciency of the cooling system. A few rolled quarters for the back and a few rolled dimes for the front should do the trick. Just be certain that you do not cover any intake ports when you position your machine on the coin platform.
