The MUST have program on a laptop is

The OS!

Everything else is up to you heheeh

A firewall, I use ZoneAlarm. Antivirus, I used Symantec. CHC as someone already mentioned. I use Diskeeper for defragmenting cause it really rocks. Office 2003!

I've found MediaMonkey to be a pretty good music organizer and player.

I also have Photoshop and Dreamweaver for web design and photo editing.

It pretty much depends on what you use your laptop for. Bare necessities are OS, antivirus, firewall, and CHC.

Here is how I pick what I like to keep in my stable of must-haves:

1. System monitoring software (e.g., Centrino Hardware Control, Mobilemeter etc.)
2. FTP Client/Server (I use WFTP)
3. VNC Software to tunnel into my desktop from work/vacation (I use UltraVNC)
4. Software to monitor wireless signal strength/quality ( I use INTEL's software)
5. HDD Defragger (I use Exec Software's Defragger)
6. Anti Virus Package (I use Symantec AV Corporate Edition)
7. Firewall (I am behind a firewalled router so that minimizes the need to put up a software firewall but I left Windows XP SP2's built in firewall enabled anyway.
8. For extra pizza'z I have Konfabulator with the Weather widget(plugin) and others

There you have it. Everything a laptop owner should have in his/her bag-of-goodies.

This is the first I've heard about the Centrino Hardware Control. Does it help that much with battery life? Where do you get it from?
