Netgear WGR614v5 & my I700M. AHHHHH

Hey Guys.... i'm really havin' a problem here ...

I just recently purchased this Wireless Netgear router online and I have had nothing but problems with it from the start. (WGR614v5)

First off. I couldn't get it to communicate with the modem at my house with my DSL (SBC YAHOO). So, I took it to my mom's house and configured it there (on a cable modem), It worked great. I configured it with a Net Key...Don't know if that makes a diff . Then, I took it home to my modem and it showed connected on my lappie, the stregnth showed "Excellent". However, when I tried to start up IE it showed a search page that read " Page not found."

So, after being really fustrated I called Netgear and was on the phone with them for an hour trying to config it to work, we went through everything. Run screens and resets...Never got it working. They came to the conclusion that it was a defective router...I know it's not! It worked at my mom's house! Anyway, they want me to send it back to them at my cost .

I was reading the forums on the netgear site and it seems that a lot of people are having the same problem that I am... But....My question is, does it have to do with my lappie or my SBC Yahoo DSL? I would appreciate any help that I can get... Thanks.

Did you go into Network Connections and configure your Wireless Network connection?

Yes... When i was talking with netgear support. His main thought on why it wouldn't work was... Both the modem and the router have the same IP address and will not communicate. So, he went to DOS and tried to configure it that way and wasn't successful... Is this what you mean?

Did you setup your WGR614v5 to connect to your DSL using PPPoE? You should have a username and password for you DSL and you need to set your router to login so you can access the internet. Can you provide more detail as to your hardware setup and how you have configured your router? Have you tried plugging into the router instead of using the wireless?

DOS ? Are you using windows 98 on your Inspiron 700? If using Windows Xp go to Control Panel/Internet Connections/New connections wizard and configure a connection. You may also have a listing for Wireless setup wizard in Control Panel.

If your using the WAN port on the router you may need to set the LAN ip's for the router on a different subnet. I use 172.xxx.xxx.xxx for my router and the default for my modem. This seems to work.

Or depending on your modem you can set it for bridged mode and let the router handle the connection to your DSL provider via PPPoE.

I'm using WinXP Pro. I may not be calling it the right thing when I say DOS. It's in the Start menu, STart/Run/CMD is what I was refering to.

Well...Last night I was up again till 2am trying to figure out this stupid router!!! On the phone with Netgear and SBC. Finally I got someone on the phone who kinda new what they where doing. First off we tested the router to see if it is defective....nope. 2nd, we took a look at my DSL Modem to see what the settings where, and sure enough, just as you said, the modem was acting as a router and was stopping the router from doing its job. So the Netgear tech had me call SBC to switch the modem over to bridge mode. Once that happened the netgear tech gave me instructions to set the router accordingly, one piece of the instructions was to check my connection and make sure it was PPPoE, it was. But....I was still having trouble bringing up a IE browser, I would get a "page not found" error.

Finally went to bed at 2am, couldn't take anymore. I figure if I can't get it to work tonight...I'm going to sell it and go with another router company. I know it's not all the routers falt, but at the same time, it seems that everyone who's bought this router is experiencing somewhat of the same problem. Does anyone have any last thoughts before my final attempt?

Throw it away.
I travel alot and b4 wireless was so widespread in hotels I wanted a small router that would work easily and after some research bought the apple airport express.
Works great with windows and I guess if you like itunes does some wireless streaming as well.
Pricey (@$130) but worth every penny because of no aggravation.
Small, cool looking and overpriced but I save so much online I figured why not.

I assume you can see your router's web page? It should be at 192.168.0.1 (possibly 192.168.100.1).
If you can, then you are probably having a DNS issue. DNS = Domain Name Server--it's what translates www.google.com into 216.239.39.99, for example.
If you can't, then you probably have a DHCP problem. DHCP = Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol--it's a scheme where someone else configures your computer with an IP address.

In fact, try this in your browser: where you normally type in the URL, type the 216.xxx. number above and see if you get the google home page.

If you did get the web page, then it for sure is a DNS problem. If you didn't, then, like I said above, you most likely have a DHCP problem (either in the router or in Windows XP).

There is a third, less-likely, possibility: your router isn't connecting properly to the DSL modem (PPPoE isn't working right for some reason). You can look at your router's logs to see what it's doing when establishing the PPPoE session. BTW, PPPoE = Point-to-Point-Protocol over Ethernet. It's main purpose nowadays is to allow the ISPs (SBC in your case) to force you to log in when connecting to their network.
