Woohoo!

Just picked up my XPS Gen 2 from the depot (after Dell shipped it to the wrong address ). Man, this thing is awesome.

My original plan was to condition the battery... full charge before I do anything. Well.. got too excited and scrapepd that idea...

The glossy screen is awesome. No lit pixels that I'm aware of, though I saw the light leakage immediately. I guess I'll have to adjust.

My initial impressions: not bad. I don't like the touchpad very much... I don't know why. This is the Alps one. My i5150 has the Synaptics and I would pay extra money to have that one instead (yes, it is that much better). I don't know why it's so much better... it just feels more natural.

My XPS came with all CDs. Drivers + Utilities, WordPerect, and Applications. It also came with the original OS disc. Surprisingly, the OS was in a CD case, and not a paper sleeve... pleasing....

Hmm.. what else... the speakers are 10x better than my i5150's.. but that's not saying much. In any case, they're great as far as I'm concerned.

Another thing that's annoying me... I can't get across the screen with one sweep of the touchpad!!!! lol. Ah well.. the joy of screen real estate

Gonna install some games to try out later on.

EDIT: few more things to add... the 100 GB 7200 RPM HD is dead silent (though it may be being drowned out by my XPS Gen 4's fans). Also, the DVD burner feels cheap and flimsy... gotta be careful with that. The ejects are STRONG though, lol

EDIT #2: I was also pleased to find that it came with a LCD Screen cleaning solution, complete with a cloth and two cleaning...solutions... I haven't heard of anyone getting this, so it was a nice surprise.

I got the Samsung LCD (leakage) and my speakers suck. Or maybe it's just something rattling but it's not the internal sound card cuz headphones work good. I think the speaker is vibrating against something on high notes. It's weird. I also got the NEC DVD drive and it seems fine. Burnt a CD-R tonight and it was fast. Running memtest on my 2GB of Transcend right now. 27 minutes in and no errors. Wish me luck! Good luck gaming!! I got 5151 on 3dmark05 with 77.76 drives, no overclock and AV and FW running.

Adjust the mouse/touchpad properties in the control panel, dude. And congrats to you!

Got my first error at 57 minutes. Greatttttt

^You should have quit at 56, then you'd be a happy stickman.

But your memory error may have been due to a random cosmic ray or sunspot activity.

Let Memtest run for a few more days and see if you get any more errors. Good luck!

Indeed I will, but I would have felt much better if it happened at say 30 hours. The odds are against it now. Can the Elpida chips live it down? It failed on Test #3, any significance to that?

I adjusted it just to play around.. I have to do some fine tuning later (after formatting) to see which setting suits my needs. The main thing I'm worried about is the cursor moving too fast when I want to make small movements.

^Get a good gaming mouse instead of wearing an unsightly hole in your touchpad.

Elpida...mate...RMA them and ask for Micron. Don't waste your time with them.

Yeah, I am saddened. Can you actually request Micron chips?

Don't know the answers to your questions. Why don't you start a new thread? But if I were you, I'd take out the memory, clean the contacts (rub with a pencil eraser) and switch the sticks around when you reseat them.

Then start the test again. Maybe you'll have better luck the second time around.

BTW, I wonder if the rattling sound you're hearing when you play your tunes thru the laptop speakers could be the keyboard quaking. I notice that on mine a lot....

Yeah it's real weird. It's a faint sound, but noticeable to my ears. It took a few minutes for my dad to hear it. I am going to let the test run until at least tomorrow night and then figure out where I stand. If it's just 1 error I can live with it.

Question about scrolling with the touchpad...

What is the attitude of the scrolling? Is it smooth, or "choppy"? By this I mean, if I move my finger 1mm on the touchpad, does the page scroll a tiny tiny bit, or does nothing, and upon moving farther, will move done one "chop" (kinda like page down, but doesn't scroll a whole page).

I ask because my Synaptics touchpad scrolls the "smooth" way... I love it.. it's os much easier to read and scroll, as opposed to the "choppy" way where I lose my line whenever I scroll.

I don't see why not..heck, you *MIGHT* get my sticks.....

Give them a call....

Mine is fine.. I actually kind of like, but that's probably because I've never used the other. Who knows. 2.18 passes and 1 error

Heh. Are you running with a UPS/power conditioner protecting the laptop? Are you running with the battery in the laptop?

Just trying to be thorough--though if you have ANY doubts, go ahead and RMA the puppies (BTW: "which" stick caused the error?).
I have it on my APC SurgeArrest Professional... going to let it run into tomorrow, and I have no idea what stick it is. If I get another error I'll RMA, but isn't there a thread somewhere saying how 1 error is inevitable? I just broke 2 hours without another error, so that is over 1 hour without errors... We'll see how it goes. I will request Micron chips though the next time (I would RMA both).

Oh yeah, the battery is in the laptop. Does that make a difference?

Well, you are doubly-protected against power brownouts/surges/outages. Any of these conditions could "hiccup" your processor/hardrive/memory/etc.
This makes your 1 error a little more suspicious.

My normal policy is: 24 hours without 1 error, but if there IS an error (only 1 error, mind you), then double/triple it and make sure it passes with just the 1 error.
Yeah I am going to let it go until at least tomorrow night. If there are anymore errors, then I am RMAing
