Hello everyone, I am new here and have a very important question. I am going to be buying a new notebook soon, currently I have an HPzt3000 and I love it, but its time for a new one. I recently bought a new HP and was very unhappy with it and I sold it. So I am debating on the Sony FS675 or the Apple Powerbook G4 in 15''. What notebook in your opinioins is better for wireless, performance, user freindly, size and weight. What should I go with? I have never used a MAC before and have no clue how they work or run, any info would be greatly appreicated...Thank you all...

Well, for user friendliness, size and weight the PowerBook would be ideal. However if you're looking for the most powerful laptop you can buy the PowerBook isn't for you.

As far as how Macs work, they're point and click just like Windows. There are differences, of course, but they're fundamentally the same.

And with a Mac you don't have to worry about viruses or spyware.

The Sony FS series is really nothing special, although the screen is amazing. This one has, by far, the nicest screen out there. You can go for the Powerbook if you really want to make the switch, but if I were you I would do some more research and get a different 15" PC. Asus Z71V (then you can join the fan club here on the forums) or something else depending on how much you want to spend.

As far as the computer being user-friendly you have to ask yourself what you want to do with the computer. Macs are severely limited in what they can do, but if you are someone that just wants to carry around a laptop and do work and internet then the Powerbook would be great for you, although very expensive!

As far as viruses and spyware goes, just be smart with the computer and get free anti-spyware and anti-virus stuff and you're set.

Well, there you go! Don't get a Mac. It's not worth the time, effort, and money to switch to an unfamiliar platform.

Personally, I'd recommend the ASUS Z70V

As for Macs being impervious to viruses and spyware, don't believe it.

Windows XP (even SP2) is admittedly more vulnerable, but this is mostly the result of its prominence. Mac viruses, while being fewer, do indeed exist, and while the obscurity of Mac systems in general offers a level of protection from direct attacks, they can be just as vulnerable as Windows machines when unsavvy users are exploited by trojan horses.

If there is nothing really significant pushing you towards an Apple other than spyware and virus worries I would go with a PC, there are many measures an aware PC user can take towards securing their computer.

What makes you hard pressed for a Sony? They are great for media stuff, and their screen is great for viewing movies too. Sony's are expensive. You are paying for a name. You could get more notebook for your money going with someone else.

I'm not warding you away from going with the Sony just suggesting that you should broaden your search from Apple or Sony to: Apple or PC.

Apples are pricey and their accessories are as well. Plus you would have to relearn for the Powerbook.

It's a result of Windows having tons of security holes and lightly protected access to core functions steaming from using ancient code for compatibility reasons. Are Macs immune to viruses? No. However, the programer has to have real talent to write one which will actually do something. Nothing will install or access core functions on a Mac without an administrator password. As for spyware since there is no active x to take advantage of and since programs can't install on their own, spyware is really difficult. It's like a gate with a rusty padlock compared to a modern bank vault.

Unless you want to "learn" how to use an Apple, I wouldn't recommend it. I wouldn't get a Sony either. Too expensive for what they offer. You can get an Asus for less that is as good as if not better.

Sonys are good only if you absolutely need the lightest notebooks with the very decent to high performance (relatively speaking in accordance with their weight). The 'high performance' models, aka "supposed DTR's" aren't worth shit. They are EXTREMELY expensive and don't even house the latest and greatest parts (gfx cards, ram...etc.)

You are truly paying for the name (and very nice screens, truth be told, but not nice enough to warrant the humongous price tags).

Desktop icons and window buttons on opposite side, use command (apple) key for hot key combinations, cmd-option-escape is roughly equivalent to ctrl-alt-delete, defragging is automatic, F9-F11 for expose, F12 for widgets, drag applications folder to dock and right/ctrl click to bring up a list of all applications. That's all you need to know.

If you want a stable no virus nor spyware no problem then apple for sure. They also look great and have good wirless, but remember that you will have a harder time buying software, but if you dont mind, go for it. I got the Mac Mini and i ordere a Asus because I just need a PC for gaming but i love the apple for video editing and so stable

personally, I think it this way:
-- Asus: they look just like Dell, I rather get Dell since their support service has a better reputation around.
-- Dell: they do have cheap stuffs but look, why you can't find any Dell laptop store around and the only way to buy their stuffs is online? BECAUSE that's the way they save billions ---> well, if they do save that much and their laptop still look this way (can't compare to any others) then I bet they are the one put more money of you and me in their pocket than any other companies.
-- Sony --> you pay for the look rather than performance
-- Toshiba --> there're so many problems reported these years on their computers (I personally experience once and damn no, I'm not going to deal with that again + their support service is rude)
-- Apple --> I would have own a brand new 17" powerbook by now if they didn't decide to make the switch

That much I can say for now. THere will be people not going to agree with me but this is my reference and I will stick with this regardless what they say.

I disagree that Asus looks like Dell, they are nothing close to looking alike. Asus has great built quality and Dell, not so much.

linux, anyone?

also, i find it hard to swallow that dell has a better support sevice reputation the asus. many of the asus resellers bend over backwards to help their customers, whereas dell....well, just look them up on resellerratings.com

Sonys are basically Apples with windows. If you don't know alot about macs you shouldn't get one. Os x is cool to look at, but for a windows user it takes getting used to. Your best bet is a FS660 with a $250 rebate, that's the deal I got at compusa. It also makes sense to not look at only 2 brands first thing in your search, but stay away from HP. Dell is alright if you get a killer deal and if they can finally correctly design their cooling systems. (I had a 5100 that burnt up.)

It takes about a week to get used to OS X from Windows. You make it sound like Sisyphus rolling the boulder up the hill.
Sorry for the misunderstanding, learning OS X is easy, but if you want to start messing around with stuff it's best you know what you're doing (that goes for windows too). Things get much easier once you memorize the shortcut keys. Honestly, I love OS X and it's well designed, I just wait for the day when we can put it on our Sonys and Dells. Apple has said they won't do it, but they have to cave sometime. (BTW: I learned how to use OS X on a 17" powerbook during class almost instantly, but I have had a lot of experience with older versions of Mac OS.)

Iv used Windows for about 6 years, linux for 2 years and Mac for about 4 months now. Mac was the easiest to learn.
