DDR2 question

Just recently got my Dimension 4700 with 512 MB (2x256) from Dell. I wanted to upgrade it but I heard that you should always install DDR2 in pairs. If I choose to install just another 512 stick will that really affect the computer a lot or should I go for 2x256 sticks. I don't need insane RAM for this computer as it will be doing mostly basic things so I'm wary of adding 2x512 sticks.

It should work fine, but will not take full advantage of DDR2. So, it (the ram and therefore the computer) may run a little slower.

I'll make another of my famous ASSumptions here, I believe you are referring to dual channel, not ddr. DDR1 and DDRII I don't believe need pairs, but for dual channel to work properly it is required to have identical (to the best of my knowledge) pairs. THe differences between dual channel and DoubleDataRate can be researched quickly through this forum as there have been many discussions. Good luck!
