powerbook lost nic

I traded an old iMac 333MHz for a box of "unknown" Powerbook parts. I got 3 Wallstreet II mobos, 250MHz G3, 233MHz / 512KB G3, 292MHz G3, and 2 Wallstreet 1 mobos. Plus 4 LCD's and 2 full cases and 2 more bottom and top plastics, plus 4 batteries. The list in not important to the thread but I'm emphasizing the awesome deal I got! I paid $25 for all that (shipping for the iMac).

Anyway I ended up getting the Wallstreet II working with the 233MHz G3 (gets 7 hours batt life off 2 batteries. Everything was going great, got OS9 then all the updates to OS 9.2.2. Alll of sudden NIC disappears. Its no longer in system profiler but does show up as "ethernet" in tcp/ip settings. Won't get internet and also won't connect to my PowerMac Blue n White as it did before. I tested the same cable and port on the router with 3 different machines all that worked. I also tried a static IP. I work for GearHost (web hosting) so I know a little about networking. Just want to get that out of the way before I get the usual simple solutions hehe.

I am wondering before I take apart the whole thing and replace the mobo is there anything else I can try? Can I replace a system file? Can I uninstall something? In Windows you can remove and reinstall a driver, is there something similiar in Mac OS? (no windows flaming please) Thanks!

to sum it up the ethernet NIC (built in network card) is gone.

-Yes the cable is good
-yes the router is good
-yes I have tried static IP
-it will not get IP using DHCP
-it did work before
-this is a Wallstreet series II rest of laptop works great

Sorry if I sound "pissy" I have posted to some other forums and mailing lists and gotten anything from Windows flaming to maybe it is the cable, you should try a different one just be sure. It get a "little" frustrating lol. Thanks in advance to any suggestions. If I missed something simple please call me an idiot and help! I WILL not be offended.

Wipe the computer and install OS 9 again...then apply each update again and see which one makes it go poof.

Or, hell, try installing OS X on it.

its too slow for OS X ... reinstall is the last option. This is a brand new load so I'm thinking its something I did. I'm gonna replace some files and see what happens
