Regarding Mobile Graphics Cards

Hey, Ive been looking around the forums since mid october waiting for the 4780. I cancelled the Hypersonic zx7 due to "not so great" reseller ratings and found this nifty place.

Anyways, my question is how much difference is there between the Mobility Radeon 9000 and 9600. I need a laptop soon around turkey day and wonder if its worth the wait for 4780 since its been postponed til no one knows when and the old previous predicted launch date of "the end of october" has passed. Currently, my desktop is running a Geforce ti4600... how well would those 2 graphics card go against the ti4600, and against each other.

Also, while I browsed ATI's website, they didnt offer any updates for thier Mobility line yet the sager community talks about Omega Drivers (Insert number here), Catalyst Drivers (Insert more numbers here) and whatnot. Im confused on that topic and any insight on this matter would greatly be appreciated!

Hope to be purchasing a new Sager soon! Hopefully the 4780 will be out before Im forced to get the 4760

Ok people are gonna tell yuou there is a huge difference between the 9000 and the 9600 but Im gonna say, from my experience, the difference isnt that huge.

My 9000 was solid. I could run most games at 1600.1200 except the shader intensive ones.

When my mobo died and I replaced it with one that has a 9600, I expected a much bigger difference. I expected to run Shader games (like bloodrayne, which I now run at 1024.768) at 1600.1200. While there is an improvement from the 9000, I just expected it to be bigger.

Dont forget, the 9600 can support directx 9. the 9000, only 8.1

As for omegas drivers, they are Tweaked ATI drivers that run GREAT. Faster than their ATI counterparts.

Get them from http://www.driverheaven.net

They are also modded to work with mobility cards, so you dont have to mod them yourself.

I disagree on the part where they are faster than the ATI drivers. I benchmarked my rig with every set of drivers and the latest WHQL's got the best benchmark scores. The Omega's were consistantly 200-300 points slower on 3Dmark03. I have yet to try tweaking the 3.9's, but I have every possible combination tested with the ATI w/powerstrip, and the Omega's. My stock ATi score was 2992 and with Omega's 2691. Even after moving the D3D and GL settings down to performance without overclocking the best I got was 2708. Unless of course i was doing something wrong. I also noticed a signifigant difference when playing Halo, so much that I went back to the WHQL drivers without a second thought.

omegas are for gaming not benchmarks

But they still didnt perform as well for me even when gaming. I saw a noticeable difference. I also notice that opinions on this vary and it may be different from one game to another, but for me while playing halo the omega's were garbage.

Do you overclock usually? When not using Omegas?

Some argue that Omega uses image quality enhancement. While I know this to be true on nVidia cards, I have seen no proof of it on ATI cards.

The 9600 is an all-around faster card, past the DX support. In the long run, the 9600 will be useable much later than the pokey 9000 will be...

Right now, i run every game i have on 1600x1200 (UT2k3, COD, BF42, etc), and i KNOW i could not do that on the crappy 9000...

Vandel - i have tried them both with all the different settings, and omegas offer the more options by far, but still never did as well. I overclock playing halo during certain campaigns I know are known to slow down and it works beautifully.

Someone mentioned powerstrip, is that an add-on to the graphics card? or is it another driver? Also, do you guys use the Omega's, Cata's and whatnot's with the drivers supplied by Sager or just choose one driver to run your card.

Thanks for the replys!

Omega's are a different set of drivers customized by Omega. They are a variation so to speak of the ATI version. I personally use the latest WHQL certified ones from Sager's website with powerstrip. Powerstrip is a software program that allows you to modify aspects of the cards performance much like the Omega drivers do. It can be found here:
