Any probs w/ microsoft crit. updates?

I just got my Alienware area 51m...am blown away, but I downloaded the MSFT Critical patches and I started experiencing problems.

Some of the problems were things like a jumpy mouse and problems with sounds.

When I did a system restore, to a point prior to the patch, the problems were all gone.

Anyone have a similiar problem?

i hate to ask the noob question, but I am curious.

Do you have a Kensington mouse? If do you need to back out the Kenisington drivers you installed, there is a known bug.

Otherwise back the patches out olne by one until the problem goes away, then report back on which patch caused the issue. If it's ion fact one of the security patches I would be happy to ask alliance support about it for you.

You need the patches, they are crucial. Also BTW next Tuesday will be the next critical patch release, they have gone to releasing patches the second Tuesday of every month.

OK, i hate to beat a dying horse, but its happening again!

Now, follow me for a quick second here...I call customer support to inform them that i am get "skips" in my audio, or hiccups if you will, and they suggested I use the restore feature to unintsall the microsoft critical patches...which I did.

Later, i called again to ask about the critical patchs, basically inquiring if I should reinstall them, and was told "without a doubt." Anyone want to guess what happened when I reinstalled them?

Now here is the thing...i paid a lot of money for this laptop, andI will be honest, it should work. Better yet, it should come with the latest set of microsoft updates installed, so I dont have to do it. If the computer doesnt work properly with critical updates, frankly, the computer is not functioning propoerly.

Sitting next to me is a 2 year old dell...it has all the critical patches installed, it doesnt skip, or hiccup, in the audio. I find myself asking why I spent all this money when i have a computer that, frankly, played command and conquer better than this one??

Anyone want to answer that for me?

Again, just need to vent--then again, I want to also vent about being on the phone with customer service 5 times in the first 2 days Ive possessed this machine...but another post

OK, lets take a logical approach.... You get choppy sound after a patch install.

1. Are you just doing the "critical patches" or are you doing everything, such as "driver updates" and "the optional pieces." You should just be doing the "critical updates."

2. EXACTLY wich version of the c-media driver are you using, post it please so we can verify for you if you have the correct version.

3. Windows XP pro, or Windows XP home?

C-Media AC97 Audio Device
Using v .29 Driver

Windows XP home

And, yes, I installed the optional patches...here is the thing...I was having problems with hibernate, and the Alienware Tech instructed me to add the optionals....

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Had the same problem... it was the video driver.

apparently the drivers for the 9600 aren't quite finished, or stable.

So I used Omega's driver sets... no problems since then.

Well, save for a VPN issue that is irritating the hell outta me (causes my lappy to take 3 minutes to boot everything up). It's a Win XP thing...

Ok...so before I use the Omega drivers...the site mentions this...

"An important info has come to my attention, if you have a Radeon 9600 Pro card,
regardless of the manufacturer, you MUST enable Fastwrites to make it work
properly, if not, you may experience crashes and lockups! (This is only a temporary
fix until ATI resolves the problem)"

Are Fastwrites enabled by default?

If not, where can i find the control options?

Sorry, I am just super computer illiterate....

Thanks for you help

Well...just an update. It appears this is an ongoing problem for Alienware laptops with a Mobile Radeon 9600--so they have started a database and are working on a solution.

Guess they now need a 201 pt inspection
