Centrino Hardware Control ...great program: easy undervolting (I highly recommend this...got my S270 with 2ghz down to 39C idle, 55C full load), custom speed-stepping, cpu temp display, hdd temp display, ati video card under/over-clocking. Get it now!

hey im a new s460 owner.. i came here before i bought the guy and am impressed with you guys. Anyway my chc reads 62C normal and around 73C with a load.. however these arent hdd temps because thats set to warn me at 55C. Im going to dl speedfan now but if u can give some quick tips on undervolting with chc i would appreciate it.

73 is Fing way to hot, i idle at about 45 on hot days 51, i have never broken 61 full load. something is blocking air flow, move the unit

This heat issue is really bothering me. I went into the local SonyStyle store, and both the S460 and S480 in the store were cooler. What I noticed was that the disk drives in both the systems would shut down and stay shut down. When the drive stays on for a while, the system would then get hot.

My drive shuts down, but comes on after the system does some IO. Even if I'm not doing anything, there is still an occasional IO that powers up the disk. I loaded FileMon and it doesn't show the IO to the disk. Strange.

I'm pretty convinced that the hot temps are caused by the disk drive. (At least in my system.) What about the other folks who see high temps... is your disk drive spinning all the time?

It appears the program that is accessing my disk is Centrino Hardware Control. When I disable it, my disk activity goes quiet and it shuts down. I'm using rmclock to lower my cpu voltage and my laptop is running much cooler. Has anyone else seen CHC causing disk accesses?
