PM750 vs. PM760/PM770 - A Significant Performance Difference?

I'm buying a DTR-notebook (Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M3438G: 17" WXGA+, nVIDIA 6800GO 256MB, 1GB RAM, 2x80 GB S-ATA) and have a problem. I could buy this notebook now but only with a PM750 cpu. F-S is planning on releasing the PM760 and maybe PM770 models but it may take up to 5 months before they do. So should I buy the PM750 model?

I ask this because of two problems. 1) The performance in Half-Life 2. As you know HL2 uses quite a bit of CPU power and as it is my favourite (and one of the few games I play) I want a really good performance. Would PM760 or PM770 give this game a big boost in performance compared to PM750? 2) I'm going to use this laptop as my only computer for at least 4-6 years. In that respect, would PM760 or PM770 offer more longetivity than PM750, or are we talking about only a slight performance difference?

So help me out here! I got an e-mail for F-S and it said that buying PM750 over PM760 or PM770 would not be a bad purchase since the performance difference isn't significant. On the other hand, we are talking about 0,14-0,27 GHz performance difference.

Are you a computer expert and a DIY guy?

Honestly there isn't too much difference, they're pretty much correct in that. HL2 is CPU intensive, however you still have to remember that the majority of the work is still on the GPU. There will be very minimal performance increases, probably in the range of 5% to go from a 1.86GHz to a 2.13GHz on a Go 6800. I wouldn't fret.

Neither. I'm just a guy who has owned a couple of desktops in his whole young life and who has learned what he knows on computers by surfing the net and different magazines. So I have never installed a component, overclocked, programmed or what have you. I do know which components are good and which are not but as far as technical stuff is concerned, I'm pretty much clueless.

Anyway, so you think I should get the PM750 model now and not wait for the PM760/770 models because the performance difference isn't that huge? Okay, I might concider it although I still wonder whether the PM760/770 would offer noticeable performance boost in Half-Life 2 and add longetivity to the notebook (since this notebook will be my only computer for at least 4 years).

And by the way, I just want to say that for me overclocking the cpu is not even an option. 1) I don't know how to do it 2) I don't want to screw up my computer 3) I don't want do anything that isn't warranty-covered. However the biggest reason is that I just don't want to. So please, no 'overclock PM750 to match PM760/770' replies.

No, it wouldn't be worth it to wait for those CPUs, and they wouldn't provide large performance gains in Half-Life 2.

I agree

THe perfomance difference probably won't be noticable. However, by waiting until they come out, if they still offer the 750 the price difference may be.

There is always something better just around the corner, so you could end up waiting forever for the next better thing. The rule of thumb is usualy get it when you need it and not sooner. That way you get the best for your money. So if you don't need it for another 4 months, then wait. If you need it now, get it now.
